Hi I'm Steve Smilanick

I am a Mormon that has been cutting, bending and welding metal since I was about 10. I like solving mechanical problems

About Me

I am married and have three daughters and 18 grandkids. All of my children live close and we have Sunday Dinner together every week. I have lived in the Roseville CA area all my life. In high school, I liked science, auto shop and metal shop. I received my BS degree in Industrial Tech. with an emphasis on Machine Tool Technology from CSUF and also a MS in Industrial Arts. I taught HS metal shop and vocational welding from 1973 until 1980 and I also taught machine shop, welding and general metals at a JC for a few years. I quit teaching to start my own business. My company, S and S Machine, is an industrial machine shop and we make all kinds of parts and assemblies for just about any industry. We also make our own product for the bicycle industry, a frame coupling that allows a bicycle frame to come apart and pack into a case which is small enough to travel as regular luggage. I was an avid cyclist and runner for about 30 years but I recently quit cycling due to safety concerns. I still jog or walk on alternate days and I enjoy yard work and just about any kind of physical activity. I have many hobbies including lapidary work (rock cutting), making, fixing and restoring all kinds of things. I also like to design mechanical devices. I am a Ham Radio operator and I regularly participate in emergency preparedness nets. I also teach new Hams about equipment choice and operation. I like to learn new things and I enjoy studying the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a convert to the Church. I was raised a Catholic but I wasn't active and had little or no interest in religion. I began dating an inactive member of the LDS Church and took the lessons but chose not to join. After we got married, my wife began attending Church and invited me to come along with her. I did and began taking the missionary lessons a second time and soon, I was baptized. I am a member because I know this truly is the restored Chuch of Jesus Christ in these latter days. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God and this is the only path to return to my Heavenly Father. I know the Gospel of Jesus Christ has strengthened me to resist the influences of the world and it has made me a better person. The Church is a true blessing in my life.

How I live my faith

In the Church, I am currently serving in a stake leadership role as a high counselor. I help oversee and train ward leaders, I represent our stake president and conduct stake business at the ward level and I also speak every month in a different ward. I will be released from that calling soon since my wife and I will be serving an 18 month mission in Zimbabwe Africa. We are very pleased to have this opportunity to serve there. In my community, I try to be a good neighbor. I am never to busy to stop and talk to neighbors while I am on my daily walk or jog. Also, since I know how to fix things, I often am called upon to help a neighbor with a repair, which I am happy to do. I also maintain a map of our neighborhood, which includes the name and phone number of each neighbor. When we get a new neighbor, I always stop by and introduce myself, give them a map and invite them to be included on the map. This has proven to be a great way to get to know my neighbors and it strengthens our community. I have also served as a board member of the homeowners association and a member of the design review committee.
