Hi I'm Wayne Overton

I'm an avocado grower and an outdoorsman and I'm a Mormon

About Me

I am a retired 78 year old high school math teacher. Some of my hobbies are working in my avocado orchard, traveling in my VW Vanagon, and camping. I am the father of a son and daughter. My wife passed away in 2003 and I remarried in 2010 to a woman whose husband died in 2000. We met at a church singles' conference. I love basketball and played full court early morning basketball 3 days a week until my 76th year when my new wife mentioned that it might be time to give up basketball. So I decided the risks for serious injury outweighed everything else and I decided to quit.

Why I am a Mormon

When my son was born I felt an overwhelming responsibility to teach him correct principles about life which included religion. After being contacted by LDS missionaries, I at length decided to investigate their message. After a lengthy investigation of reading the Book of Mormon, praying about it, attending church, getting to know some of the people, and many more things, I came to the knowledge it was true and was baptized. It is a great and wonderful thing to know who God, my Heavenly Father, is and my relationship to him. To really understand who Jesus Christ is and his role in my life and then to understand the relationship between the fall of Adam and Eve and the atonement of Christ makes all the difference in the world. It is a great thing to have a living prophet and apostles on t;he earth today to help me know what God would have me do. The Bible is a great book, but the Book of Mormon is where I gained an understanding of who God the Father and his son Jesus Christ really are and their great love for me.

How I live my faith

I joined the church when I was 34 and have worked for many years with the youth in scouting. It has been a wonderful experience and I have learned so much. Also I have served in many other areas in the church and have had the opportunity to help many people both members and nonmembers of the church. I have come to realize that service to our fellow man is very important in helping us develop the attributes of Christ. When you think about it, Christ's ministry was all about giving service to others.
