Hi I'm Jesse

I grew up in Hawaii. I am a university professor and teach Japanese and East Asian culture. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I like to surf, hike, backpack, kayak, and basically anything outdoors. I'm married and have two cute daughters. As much as possible, we like to do these things together. I have a PhD in East Asian Language and Literature and teach Japanese language and culture at college.

Why I am a Mormon

The teachings of Christ show us how to find true joy. I know I am a better person as a member of this church than I would be on my own, both because of the doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the opportunities it provides to serve others. I know that prayer works and I received guidance through the spirit at the many crossroads in my life. I am grateful for how the church has blessed my life and hope it will bless other's lives as well.

How I live my faith

I teach the young men in our ward and have been the scoutmaster for several years. I love taking the boys outdoors and showing them its beauty. I think being outdoors also teaches us self reliance and helps us remember what is most important. I try to follow Jesus's teachings to love and serve others in my everyday life, but also in terms of what that might mean as citizens of the United States and the planet. I am very grateful for this beautiful earth that our loving Heavenly Father has created for us and I think we are failing as a people to really take care of it. I am constantly thinking of ways I can be a better steward of this beautiful planet we've been given.
