Hi I'm Jan

I'm a Mormon. I'm a native Southern Californian. I'm an only child, a mom, and a grandma.

About Me

I am an only child. I lived a very happy childhood, was a good student, was editor of the high school newpaper, was student body secretary, and won awards for speech and debate in high school. I trained to be an elementary school teacher and taught 6th grade, introducing innovative programs. I married, had 2 children who I am proud of. I was a supermom--sewing award-winning Halloweeen costumes, instituting scripture memorization programs, planning surprise outings monthly and yearly vacations. I ran boutiques for 15 years and substitute taught for some years. I cared for my parents in their old age--they died within 2 months of each other. I love my husband, my children, and my 8 grandchildren.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when I was 20 and attending college. I had been very activie in the Lutheran Church growing up. I attended the Lutheran Church vacation Bible school, sang in the choir, attended "Luther League" and was the youth representative on the church council. However, when I was in college and was a bridesmaid for my best friend in the same Lutheran Church, my life was changed. My local minister married my friend and her fiancee " 'til death do you part' ". I had become familiar with the doctrine of eternal marriage at my university, and the magnitude of the principle struck me with great force. I joined the church and was married, myself, for "time and for all eternity" to my husband. I have an eternal family of two children and eight grandchildren. I appreciate the morality and honesty that the Church promotes. I love the emphasis on the family that the Church fosters. I revere the personal revelation that is afforded me as a member of the Church. I know that I will be with my family forever because Jesus Christ was resurrected for me and for all mankind.

How I live my faith

I live my religion by serving. In the community, I have been a University of California Master Gardener and Master Composter for 10 years. I arrange for speakers and for Advanced Training for master gardeners. I have installed an heirloom garden at a local state college, lectured on composting and vegetables at area garden shows and garden clubs. I have assisted for 5 years in providing city fireworks shows.I live my religion by serving. I have created spiritual/ historical events for 400, 800, and 2200. I have staged church milestone anniversary programs, adult dances, and gardening seminars. I have spent weeks and months costuming for major plays. I have organized Thanksgiving dinners, luaus, and holiday celebration for individual congregations. I have served by leading teenagers in Sunday lessons, goal setting, camping trips, river rafting, and testimony interchange. I have served as a teacher for women's Sunday lessons, and assisted them in learning cooking, homemaking, and gardening skills. I have served with Young Adults for 3 years, participating in shadow leadership, and assisting in their activities. I have taught interested young adults to cook, on a monthly basis. I served as the lead organizer in compassionate service in my congregation. This involved driving or finding drivers to take the sick to doctor appointments or to chemotherapy, cleaning house for the housebound, buying groceries for the needy, assigning or preparing meals on almost a daily basis for cancer victims. I have organized babysitting for bedfast and dying women. I have visited the elderly and taken them on outings. I have organized dinners after funerals. I have sought spiritual training and served 6 hours a week in the Newport Beach Temple. I look for needs and seek a way to fulfill them with Christlike service.
