Hi I'm Daniel

I'm a South Carolina native. I am a junior in college, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college junior studying physiology and developmental biology. I want to go on to dental school and make the world better one tooth at a time! I am from the upstate of South Carolina, so I'm close to the mountains and the beach. I love to go to both of those places. I love to play tennis, hike, read, and cook. My favorite book is probably "To Kill a Mockingbird"-it's hard to beat good, Southern lit. My favorite meal is a really good pasta dish with asparagus, walnuts and mascarpone cheese; it's a recipe that my family acquired from the Food Network. I shamefully admit that I also love TV. I am the youngest of four children. I am the happy ending to the story, since I am the youngest.

Why I am a Mormon

My mother is a convert and my father has been a life-long member of the Church. I have been going to Church my entire life. However, I came to a point where I needed to know whether the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was really the true church of God. I prayed often asking God whether the Book of Mormon was true or whether the Church was true. I cannot remember receiving a direct response after any of those prayers. I do remember, though, that one Sunday a member of the congregation was speaking about his personal convictions of the Church. He spoke about knowing that God had established His Church once again on the Earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. He shared his feelings about the First Vision. I can remember, even now, how it felt as that member spoke. I felt a peace, a calm, and a reassurance within me that what had been said was true. It is hard to put to words, but I had a distinct feeling that what that member said was right. I know that God answered my sincere question to know. That was the moment I felt I had a confirmed witness that this is the true Church, and that is why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

Right now I help to coordinate the Sunday School teachers. Ocassionally, I get to teach a lesson to my peers and that always helps to me to understand the scriptures better. It is amazing what you can learn when you are the one preparing to teach. Christ always taught the importance of service, and I also have the opportunity each week to provide service. I volunteer at a local high school. It's an alternative, last resort high school for kids that have been struggling. I am a teacher's aid in an environmental science class. I feel like I have learned a lot both from the teacher and the students.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

I know that I said earlier that I gained a testimony as I heard a member of the Church speak about the importance of Joseph Smith. That does not mean, however, that we worship him in any way. Just as Moses, Isaiah or Daniel were important prophets in ancient times, so is Joseph Smith. It is through Joseph Smith that the Lord once again organized His church and placed the priesthood power upon the earth. However, Joseph Smith is by no means our Savior, Jesus Christ.
