Hi I'm Matthew

I create functional art from salvaged driftwood and operate a gallery for local artisans. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a passion for woodworking. I've been working with my father since I was a child creating wonderful things from wood. From small finished crafts like cutting boards, jewelry boxes, trivets, and letter openers to larger items like chairs, tables, and benches. I particularly enjoy working with driftwood. I gain great satisfaction knowing I'm putting an otherwise wasted resource to good use. I'm trying my hand at writing a fictional adventure story. Imagination is something that ought to be encouraged and writing is a tremendous outlet for expression. Everyone should find a way to express themselves and what they value and writing helps me do that. I'm an avid swimmer. I love the feeling of moving through the water and enjoy the exercise. I love to sing and I've been teaching myself to play piano.

Why I am a Mormon

As a child I really wanted to be happy and to help everyone I loved to be happy too. It seemed the harder I tried to manifest happiness the further it was from being a reality. I kept wondering why everyone, including myself, was so miserable. I tried to smile and laugh as often as I could but it seemed to be a happy face on top of a lonely and unhappy heart. When I was thirteen I was introduced to the missionaries. They were somewhat of a paradox to me. They worked all day, they were far from their families, and they couldn't date girls and yet they were the happiest people I'd ever met. There was no denying it. Though I didn't grasp all of the details of what they were teaching me at first, the most important thing I learned was that the life they lived promoted genuine happiness in their lives. I determined that if I wanted to be happy, I should do what happy people do. I've been able to trace every happy moment in my life back to that decision and feel that I'm a genuinely happy person as a result of striving to live a Christ centered life.

How I live my faith

I love teaching about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Most of my responsibilities in the Church have involved teaching. From Sunday School to full time Missionary service, teaching has always been a blessing to me.
