Hi I'm Gwen Sperry

I grew up a member of the church. I am a retired teacher of students with special needs. I am a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up a member of the church. I love to travel. We lived in Holland for three years. We plan to visit Africa (we have always dreamed of going on safari), and South America. I moved around a lot as a child because my father was in the Air Force. I love children, teaching was a wonderful, rewarding part of my life. I enjoy my friendships, serving others, and being needed. Nature restores my soul. I love walking, especially in the forest. I like hiking, riding my bike on the path at the beach, and driving -which is a good since I live in Los Angeles!

Why I am a Mormon

There was a time, when I was newly married, that I had to decide for myself if I wanted to be a participating member of this church. It was difficult, my husband chose not to attend. However, I choose to participate as a member for many reasons. The most important reason, was my testimony! I have known from a very young age that Heavenly Father answered my prayers. I know that He lives, He is real, and He wants to bless me as I keep His commandments. There are blessings attached to them and by obedience to them I am living a happier life. My relationships are better, I enjoy good health, and I have great peace of mind. My life isn't perfect, I have problems like everyone else, but it is easier. I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior, and the literal Son of God. He freely gave His life for me and all mankind, so we could repent, be forgiven, and live again. In some marvelous way --His Atonement paid the price for sin, and made it possible for Him to heal and comfort us. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet, that he did see God the Father and His Son, and that he restored this church. He translated the Book of Mormon. I have read it many times. I love this book! It brings me close to God. I know that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet today, that he gets direction from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ for us in our day. I love being a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I feel fulfilled, and like my life has more meaning when I am helping and serving others. In my church, I have been able to teach children in many capacities: nursery, small classes similar to Sunday School, Cub Scouts, and girls activities. In my work with youth I've been to camp, down the Colorado River in canoes, engaged in song and dance productions, outings and spiritual lessons. I have had the opportunity to grow and stretch my capabilities as I served as teacher, mentor, and in leadership roles. Currently, I work with the women of the church, I am responsible for the for the well being of over 200 women in my congregation. This has been a very humbling experience for me. There are women from all walks of life, professionals, stay-at-home moms, young adults, single women, those with physical disabilities and health issues, and the elderly. I love getting to know these women of great faith, who share my desire to develop a close relationship with their Heavenly Father, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need. I have been blest to help instruct, encourage, and support them. What a fun time of my life!

What is the Relief Society?

Gwen Sperry
Relief Society is a group of women that meet together each Sunday for instruction in gospel subjects like prayer, preparedness, raising children, kindness, faith, and forgiving. We strive to watch over each other-- to give support in times of struggle, pain, and loss. In Relief Society, each women can have a monthly visit in their home by other women who will love, friendship, and teach them. Relief Society is about service, helping those in need--emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually. Relief Society is about learning new skills, Relief Society is fun. Show more Show less
