Hi I'm Laura Harmon

Newlywed, Language-lover, and Mormon Missionary. :)

About Me

I am a sophomore at BYU studying Exercise and Wellness. For years I had been studying languages and planned to spend my life teaching Spanish to adults, but in December 2012 I witnessed a car accident that filled me with the desire to help others in a more direct way. My major focuses on promoting physical and emotional health. I get to learn about things such as first aid, nutrition, disease prevention, and stress management, and have learned to use the skills I’m being taught to help those around me. I look forward to increasing my ability to serve others by learning much more. I planned my whole life to serve an LDS mission and was honestly a bit devastated when my plans to serve were put on hold, but Heavenly Father knew what he was doing. He led me to an amazing man who soon became my husband. I am loving spending every day with him and learning how to make a marriage work. We have an assignment in our ward to learn the ins and outs of family history and take names of ancestors to the temple once a week for them to receive religious ordinances by proxy.

Why I am a Mormon

I believe because I have seen the great differences belief makes in people’s lives. I believe because, though bad things happen to good people, goodness always finds a way to prevail. I believe because the longer I live, the more I realize one cannot always trust what can be seen and touched. I believe because others have believed and I have seen firsthand what their beliefs mean to them and have done for them. I believe because, despite my trials, I feel His presence in my daily life - the presence of someone out there who loves me unconditionally, who knows me better than I know myself, and who wants me to be happy. I believe because I am not smart enough to know, of my own intelligence, what things are right in the world, but rather must rely on Him to know what I should do. I believe because “I know that I am nothing; as to my own strength I am weak … but in His strength I can do all things.” (Alma 26:12) I believe because the values of Christ’s gospel, such as faith, hope, charity, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, honesty, loyalty, and love, are the only real solutions to the problems our world faces. I believe because there is power in believing. I believe because belief means hope, and without hope this would be a dark and frightening place. I believe because I could never have the courage to deny all the obvious signs of His love. I believe because I do have the courage to trust Him completely and try, however inadequately, to model my life after Him.
