Hi I'm Mike

I love hanging out with my family, riding my mountain bike, and growing things.

About Me

Hi, my name is Mike and I love to ride my bike on the mountain trails of Utah. Except when I crash, which happens a lot, but that is another story! I'm 53 years old, I'm happily married and my beautiful wife and I have 4 great kids. More than anything I enjoy hanging out with my family. I enjoy digital photography (I currently use the Canon SX50- Sweet!) I also love to kayak, and fish, and target shooting of all kinds. I'm a passionate gardener, and I enjoy camping and have been an avid scouter. I enjoy learning, having completed a BA in finance and a MA in public administration. I currently work as a financial controller at a private university.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in Perrysburg, Ohio, then a small sleepy town. I am the youngest of 6 siblings. As my parents did not belong to any church I knew very little about religion. My interest in religion began the day after my 16th birthday, the day my best friend died in a freak hunting accident. I began to wonder about mortality and the purpose of my life. Over the next few years I began attending local churches to learn, primarily, what happens to us after we die. The doctrines taught at these churches varied so widely and none seemed to teach the truths I was looking for. Not long after graduating from High School I met a friend who turned out to be a Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The answers he gave to my questions spoke to my heart, so when he invited me to learn more from the missionaries in his parent's home, I accepted. The truths and doctrines they taught me had a profound affect! It was as though I already knew all they were teaching me but I had only forgotten it. Through their teachings I learned of our Father's plan for each of us. I learned where I came from, why I am here, and where we go after this life. I finally knew where my friend was and what he was doing. I was baptized the day after Thanksgiving that year, and I have been thankful every day since! My conversion began when the missionaries started teaching me, but the key to my decision to be baptized came from reading, studying, and praying about the Book of Mormon. The truths and principles it teaches have wrought such a mighty change in my heart! I have felt the Holy Ghost bear witness that this book is the word of God. I know the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored on the earth, and that we are led by a living prophet today. I have been a member of the church now for nearly 35 years, the best years of my life!

How I live my faith

Three years after being baptized, I was called to serve in the Nevada Las Vegas mission. It was a bit daunting to try to teach the gospel after only being a member for 3 years, especially when my missionary companions had the benefit of a life-time of learning in the church! Since completing my mission, I have served in many capacities of leadership in the church. I have been involved in the Boy Scout organization for many years, having helped my own son and other young men achive the rank of Eagle. I have also coached little league teams for nearly 10 years. Until recently I have been a Sunday instructor for the 16 to 18 year old young men in my ward. I have always enjoyed serving in the church, whether giving service by cleaning leaves out of a gutter or hanging Christmas lights for a widow, or helping to cook or serve dinner at a church activity. To me, serving in the church is an outward expression of the inner committment I have to live my faith. I know that learning the Gospel is good, but living it is best. As my family and I strive to become more like the Savior, we have been blessed beyond measure.
