Hi I'm Tyrus Oakes

I'm an MBA student. I'm a husband and father. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in Idaho where I loved playing basketball and baseball. Prior to graduating high school, I had a series of knee surgeries that altered the course of my life- for the better. Due to the last surgery, I was unable to attend college as I had planned. While recuperating at home, I learned of volunteer opportunity teaching English in China. After much prayer I felt that instead of going off to college the next semester, I would go to China for a semester instead. This experience changed my life. While I was in China, I received a call to serve an LDS mission in Honduras. I started the two-year mission three weeks after returning home from China. I loved my time in Honduras. I love the Honduran people like family. It was such a joy and a blessing to be able to share the Gospel with those people and lose myself in the service of the Lord. After returning from Honduras, I graduated college with a degree in business, but most importantly, I found my beautiful wife. I got a job working for an investment firm where I stayed for more than three years. Then I felt inspired to go back to school to get an MBA. I am just about to graduate and will be working for an agricultural equipment manufacturer. I now have two kids. I have seen the hand of the Lord guiding me throughout my life and have been very blessed, even when the blessings haven't come in the way or in the time that I planned.

Why I am a Mormon

While I was born into a Mormon family, I continue to stay actively involved in the church because I have a testimony for myself that it is true. I have studied the scriptures and prayed to know for myself and my prayers have been answered. I have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost in my life and have seen the hand of God guiding me and helping me. I also know that because God loves us, He sends prophets to teach His children His Gospel. He wants us to live with Him again. The only way for us to know the way back is by obeying the words of the prophets. I know that God chose Joseph Smith to be a prophet to restore the Church of Jesus Christ that had been lost after the death of the Apostles in the New Testament. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet because I have read the Book of Mormon many times and my prayers have been answered that it is true. It contains the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also have a testimony that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church of Jesus Christ, restored in these last days to prepare God's children for the return of His Son. I know the church continues to be led by prophets and apostles. Living the Gospel and obeying the commandments has brought me peace and happiness. Even when my world seems to be falling apart, I can find peace and comfort in the Gospel. I also find joy in knowing that my family can be together forever. I know that God intended families to be eternal and through the blessings of temples, that can happen.

How I live my faith

I actively attend church every week and I teach a class about once a month to the adult men of the church. I also participate in "home teaching" which involves visiting members of the church and their families once a month to share a spiritual message with them and make sure their spiritual and physical needs are being taken care of. In my personal time, I read the scriptures every day. I usually read the Book of Mormon in Chinese (I have been studying Chinese for several years now) and another book of scriptures in Spanish (to make sure I don't forget the Spanish I learned on the mission). My wife and I also read scriptures together every night. Right now we are reading the New Testament together and sometimes we read the talks from the church leaders in the magazine "Ensign." Once a week we have a "Family Home Evening" where we sing, pray, have a lesson, and an activity as a family. This helps us to study and learn the Gospel together, even though our kids are very young. Another thing that has helped me in my life (personally, at work, or at school) is to dedicate Sundays to God and family. I try to avoid studying and working on Sundays, if at all possible. I know this has helped me to be more rested for the upcoming week and it has helped me get closer to my Heavenly Father.
