Hi I'm Hilton Shumway

I love technology. I was homeschooled and love reading. I love to dance. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a young man from Utah, who enjoys such things as ballroom dance, software development and other tech wizardry, and rock climbing, as well as good books. I dabble in philosophy, security, and a handful of other things, when I get the chance. I studied for a year at George Wythe University, a small liberal arts college where I read the great books--the classics from all history. I served a full-time mission in North Carolina, and am currently studying at Brigham Young University-Idaho

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the gospel of Christ, and slowly came to know that it is true. Feelings inside me I can't explain away have born witness of all it teaches. Over many years, I had opportunities to either follow what I'd been taught, or turn it aside. For whatever reason, I followed what I'd been taught--experimented on the word of God--and found that it is true. When I keep the commandments, I am happier. When I study the scriptures daily, life is better.

How I live my faith

By always being ready to help others, and by listening to those whisperings I get to do something. I always try to be a good example, and live true to what I believe.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Hilton Shumway
Well, I chose to serve a mission because I want to follow Jesus Christ, and because I have seen firsthand what happens to people as they discover how to improve their lives. Nothing improves lives more than embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Hilton Shumway
Chastity is more than just not having intimate relations, it is purity of heart and mind. When we are fully pure, we respect our body and don't put it on display. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Hilton Shumway
God never ceases to speak to His children, nor does He ever stop expecting us to learn and grow. The Book of Mormon is evidence of God's continued revelation, and it teaches us to always become more like Christ. Show more Show less

What is a ward/stake/branch?

Is it true that Jesus appeared in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection according to the Book of Mormon?

Hilton Shumway
Yes, this and many other marvelous teachings are contained in the Book of Mormon (see 3 Nephi 11). Moroni, the last prophet to write in the book invites all to read it, ponder it, and then ask God if it is true. I testify that it is true, and that God will let us know that it is when we ask. What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Hilton Shumway
The calling of missionaries is to invite people to come unto Christ. They teach of Jesus Christ, what He does for us (including explaining the role that the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith play), and invite those they teach to build faith in Jesus Christ and experience the blessings that come. What is done with the tithing that Mormons pay?

Hilton Shumway
Tithing goes toward all sorts of church endeavors that require funding. Buildings like temples and meetinghouses, publishing and distributing the word of the Lord, and more are funding from tithing. The best part, to me, is that I know that tithing also becomes a way of financial protection for me. God doesn't really need my money, but when I trust Him enough to return some of it, He watches over my life, particularly my finances. I've always been helped and sustained by Him as I've tithed faithfully. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Hilton Shumway
Nothing but the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ can save us from sin. When we allow Him to change our lives, we change. Show more Show less
