Hi I'm Duane Thomas

I grew up in north central Florida, and I've been a practicing attorney here now for 37 years. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I graduated from Columbia High School in 1966. I played football in high school and my wife and I are still big football fans! Go Gators, Cougars, and Broncos!! I served an LDS mission in Argentina in 1969-71. I graduated from BYU in 1972 and from the University of Florida Law School in 1975. I have been practicing law as an attorney since I was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1975. My wife and I have 7 children and 8 grandkids with one more on the way. I am a third generation member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In high school and the first couple of years of college, I made my spending money playing organ in a rock band. At BYU I made spending money by playing the piano during the lunch hour at the Sky Room Restaurant on top of the Student Union Building. Music has always been a big part of my life.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because after a life time of studying the Holy Scriptures, including the Bible and the Book of Mormon, I have found the doctrine of the Church to answer all the important questions of life, where did we come from, why are we here, and where are we going? and besides the intellectual satisfaction the completeness of the gospel plan found in the Church gives me, I have had the Holy Spirit bear unmistakable witness to my own spirit and to my heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that he is the Savior of the world, and that this is his Church, restored to the earth in these last days through his prophet Joseph Smith. I also have a burning witness that there is a prophet of God on the earth today, and that the Lord Jesus Christ directs the affairs of his Church today through his living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and the quorum of 12 Apostles, the same as in the ancient Church. I am convinced that the only real way to true happiness in this life is by conforming one's life to the teachings of the Savior.

How I live my faith

My wife and I have, for a number of years now, worked closely with the 18 to 30 year old Young single adults. (YSA's) Both of us have taught Institute, which is for college age Young adults, (my wife is the current Institute instructor) and early morning seminary (for high school age youth) We were called to serve in the Young Single Adult Ward in our stake for over 4 years, first as Part-time Church Service Missionaries and then as Branch President. What a blessing it has been for us. We also enjoy singing the the regional church choir. I have played church hymns on the piano for the men's priesthood meetings since I turned 12 years old and began attending priesthood meeting. I was an Eagle Scout as a youth and I have enjoyed being active in some phase of scouting almost ever since. I was a scout master, varsity scout team coach, and explorer leader in earlier years. I also served as District Scout Chairman. I'm now engaged with our local scout committee helping with activities and in raising funds to allow the boys to fully participate in summer camp and other high adventure trips.
