Hi I'm Sonia Thorne

I am a wife, a mother and many other things but no matter what I’m doing, or where I’m at, I am a Mormon.

About Me

I’ve been blessed with a wonderful and very close family. My husband and I have three amazing children that bring so much joy to our lives. I love to learn and to think and ponder about the deep questions of life. I love to travel and see God’s creations and God’s temples all over the world. Traveling has open my mind to so many things, however, I enjoy just being outside in nature and looking at the beauty all around while reflecting life’s greatest blessings. I like the simple things in life like watching the sunset, taking a walk on the beautiful mountain trails and just sitting by the fire roasting marshmallows. Thirty years ago, I became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One summer evening in 1982, my mom and I decided to take a walk to enjoy the nice weather in Washington, DC. As we were walking we saw two young men with suits and ties coming towards us. When they approached us they stopped and told us they had a message they wanted to share with us and gave us some pamphlets to read. I don’t remember everything they said but we must have given them our address because a few days later they knocked on our door and invited us to go to church. Giving our address to two complete strangers in Washington was not something we’d normally do. But now I know without a doubt that Heavenly Father put those missionaries in my path at a young age to teach me about His gospel.

Why I am a Mormon

The gospel principles and doctrines have taught me that there is a better way to live life with meaning, purpose and direction. This knowledge has changed my life forever. At the age of 15, I remember I had a lot of questions about the purpose of life and those questions have been answered by the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the missionaries were teaching me, I knew very little about the gospel but I remember a feeling of peace that permeated my soul when they were teaching me the lessons, when I read the Book of Mormon, when I attended church, and when they took me to see the beautiful Washington DC Temple for the first time. The Temple looked so pure and it radiated so much light and peace, which filled my soul with an immense spiritual awareness that heaven and earth are not too far apart, something I had never felt before. I knew then that Heavenly Father knew me individually and wanted me to listen to His message that the missionaries had to share with me. I remember the day I got baptized; feeling I was beginning a new life with Heavenly Father by my side to guide me with life decisions. I was no longer alone to figure out life by myself. I could not have accomplished the things that I have been able to do in my life without the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not something I just do on Sundays but it’s a way of life. Everything in life is a gift. Keeping a close relationship with the Savior and Heavenly Father reminds me of that gift every day. “Think of our physical sustenance, it’s truly heaven-sent. The necessities of air, food and water all come to us as a gift from a loving Heavenly Father.” Russell M. Nelson. As years have passed, I have come to develop a deeper understanding of the gospel principles and doctrines. I’ve developed a stronger relationship with my Savior and Father in Heaven. I have felt their divine guidance and strength through the gift of the Holy Ghost throughout my life.

How I live my faith

I love the Book of Mormon. It truly testifies of the Savior Jesus Christ. "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." 2 Nephi 25:26. The Book of Mormon has answered many life’s questions and has given me peace and hope. Most importantly it has testified to me by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer. I am filled with gratitude for the Savior’s infinite atonement. “Christ’s Atonement can change and heal our hearts. He has power to comfort an anguished heart pierced by sorrow or sin.” I don’t remember a time when Heavenly Father has not been by my side guiding my life, even though sometimes I don’t realize it until years later. Even in the most difficult moments when prayers seem to go unanswered, I’ve felt His presence letting me know He is aware of my pain. Because of the tender mercies of the Lord, I have come to know my Savior in a very personal way. I can now say ‘thy will be done’ and I am able to patiently ‘wait upon the Lord.’ “Trials and tribulations tend to squeeze the artificiality out of us, leaving the essence of what we really are and clarifying what we really yearn for.” The gospel has brought meaning, purpose and direction to my life. Because I have experienced the joy and peace that the gospel brings, I want to share this knowledge with all of God’s children. “The truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.” Joseph Smith. I live my faith by sharing my testimony and conversion story, by serving others and serving in my callings in the church and by trying to show Christlike love and kindness with people I come in contact with.
