Hi I'm Dave

I grew up in Virginia. I study and write about literature and culture. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a proud father of a little girl. I work in healthcare IT to pay the bills, but my passion is American literature and culture in all its forms. I love bicycling, soul music, and board games.

Why I am a Mormon

My mother and father taught me the foundational beliefs of the church while I was young, but religion found no more than an intellectual place in my heart for much of my youth. But that intellectual interest ebbed and waned when life sped up and circumstances made following the Lord difficult. One night, disappointed with where my life was headed, I spoke for the first time with real earnestness to my Father in heaven. Kneeling down outside, I gazed at the stars and wondered and prayed to know of His existence. I felt a powerful assurance both inside my heart and around my body that God had real power and incredible love, and that I could feel both of those things if I would change my life and follow him. I returned to the faith of my family to begin that journey. That's why I started to "be" Mormon. But I've stayed because of the wisdom and truth I continually hear and feel from modern prophets. The gospel of Jesus Christ, restored through Joseph Smith, weaves a beautiful tapestry that makes our Father in heaven's plan accessible in a way that answers so many of life's questions. The Book of Mormon teaches precious lessons, and its power is another witness that Joseph Smith's incredible story is true and that Jesus Christ again has established an organized institution and a specific representative to show how to be happy in this life and in the life to come. Every day, as I study the words of Christ and his prophets and apostles, I receive a renewed feeling that God does speak today, and his words are incredibly important and timely.

How I live my faith

One of my greatest joys is studying the words of the Lord given to both ancient and modern prophets and trying to apply them during my day. As I ponder beautiful teachings from the scriptures and feel their truthfulness, I become a better friend, husband, father, and coworker. The teachings of Jesus Christ and his prophets help make me little kinder, a little slower to judgment, and a little more patient each day. In my congregation, I work behind the scenes to make sure every member is heard and loved. I get to visit friends and neighbors, serving them when life gets crazy and learning from their experiences.
