Hi I'm Joseph

I'm a quiet guy from Utah, who loves Science, Mathematics, and Computers. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'd imagine most people think of me as some quiet smart kid. I was born and raised in Utah, by two wonderful parents. I'm the middle child of five children. When I have free time I enjoy playing video games, writing computer programs (mostly little games), and spending time with my family. I've started college, but that's on hold for now, because I'm serving as a missionary, teaching people about the stuff that also happens to be all over this site, mormon.org. I love learning, and especially Math, Science, and Engineering.

Why I am a Mormon

I've been raised in this church from my youth, and that certainly has a lot to do with my becoming a Mormon. However, as I go further into life, I have become more and more convinced that this is the place to be. Where once I trusted parents and church leaders, I have now prayed to God myself, and through sacred experiences, I have felt powerful words and feelings confirm that this is the correct church of God, where I need to be. In addition to the miracles I have been blessed to observe, the LDS church and its doctrine have given me direction, purpose, and many of my most cherished friends and experiences. I have felt the love of God through this church, and the people here, and it's where I intend to stay.

How I live my faith

Most of the ways I live my faith are pretty simple-but-significant lifestyle things. I pray, I go to Church, I read the scriptures, I try to be morally clean, and not get into trouble, to name a few things. I like being helpful, and consider it my duty to forgive others, and be honest with others. One of the biggest sacrifices I've made for my faith is serving as a missionary, which has meant giving up video games, computer programming, and even being with my family for a while, in an effort to bless others' lives. I particularly hope to fulfill God's expectations of me. As I pray and read the scriptures, I try to figure out what God would have me change. I'm not always perfect at following the guidance I receive, but I keep trying.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Joseph
There is no message God give us that is more precious than the message of the atonement of Jesus Christ. The atonement was the selfless sacrifice given by Jesus Christ, in taking upon himself the punishment of the sins of us all, so that he could help us overcome our sins and imperfections. It included His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and His torturous death on the cross at Calvary, and its effects are far reaching. We learn from scripture and other revelation that this sacrifice saved us from the effects of Adam's transgression in the Garden of Eden: Saving us from physical death by the promise of the resurrection and from spiritual death, or separation from God, by opening the path to return to Him. It also gave Jesus Christ power to forgive us of our sins individually, and help us change and be perfected as we live His gospel. It is by relying on Jesus Christ and His atonement that we become cleansed from sin. As we do this, our hearts are changed and we become more like Him, slowly becoming fit to live with God and inherit eternal life. We do this by living His gospel, through exercising faith, repenting of our sins, making and keeping the covenant of baptism, receiving and listening to the Holy Ghost, and following the example of Jesus Christ to the end of our lives.
