Hi I'm Torry Barnes

I'm a college freshman and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho. No, I'm not a potato farmer. I graduated from high school in 2012. I had the opportunity to serve as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in northern New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont). Yes, I was one of those guys with a white shirt, tie, and name tag walking up and down your street holding a Book of Mormon. Right now, I am currently a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho studying journalism.

Why I am a Mormon

From very personal and tender experiences, I know that Jesus is the Christ. I know by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus the Christ rose from the dead and lived again! I know that He did in reality appear to a young New England boy named Joseph Smith almost eighteen hundred years after He overcame death. Joseph did in reality see Jesus Christ and God the Father. From wonderful and tender experiences God has given me, I know that all this to be true.

How I live my faith

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I live my life similar to everyone else. As a college student, I often find myself busy doing homework or hanging out with my friends. As a Latter-day Saint I also strive to follow my Savior Jesus Christ the best I can. I make mistakes, but I try my best to live a life God would want me to live. The greatest joy and inner happiness that I have felt in my life has been as I have served and followed the Savior.

Who chooses the Mormon prophet?

Torry Barnes
Jesus Christ has always chosen His servants. Today is no different. We happily proclaim to the world that the heavens are not closed, but have been re-opened. Christ Himself runs His Church again, and He does it through His chosen Prophets and Apostles just like days of old. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about Jesus Christ? Do Mormons believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?

Torry Barnes
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He was the prophesied Savior that the prophets long before predicted. He suffered and died fro each of us so that we might find lasting happiness in this life and eternal life in the life to come. Before He was born in Bethlehem, Christ was called Jehovah. He lived with Father and under His Father's direction Christ created the earth. There is no other name where we can be saved except it be His name. Show more Show less

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

Torry Barnes
Christ commanded His disciples to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). We believe the gospel of Jesus Christ has the power to change lives. All of us make mistakes and sin. We all have feels of guilt and shame. However, through Jesus and His teachings we can be healed and made absolutely clean from any wrongdoing we have committed. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Torry Barnes
Christ taught that "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). Baptism is essential because it washes away our sins and literally gives us a clean slate. We all need to be made clean. However, throughout human history so many of God's children have not had this opportunity. God is no respecter of persons, and thus gives all His children this privileged. The Lord permits members of His Church to be baptized for their deceased friends and relatives. These deceased persons then have the opportunity in the spirit world to accept or reject this work done for them. Show more Show less
