Hi I'm Deryl F. Cooley

I was raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints, but was rebellious and inactive as a youth.

About Me

I have been married for almost 40 years, I am the father of 13 children, and I have 20 grandchildren with three on the way. I raised horses for twenty years, but could not make it profitable. I enjoy riding horses, hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with my family. One of my favorite hobbies was backpacking, until back problems stopped my ability to do so. I returned to school after 40 years to achieve my bachelors degree in business management. I was in construction until the recent recession which helped me make the decision to go back to school.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents were members when I was born, and I was baptised when I was eight years old. I became inactive when I was a teenager, and moved away from home when I was 17 years old. As a youth I felt the gospel of Jesus Christ was too restrictive, and I was always told what I could not do. I had active friends and relatives who never gave up on me, and were always coaxing me to go to this meeting or that meeting. One night at a youth fireside I had a spiritual experience. The Holy Ghost witnessed to me the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and that I needed to make many changes in my life. As I have grown older I have found the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not restrictive or confining, it is the path to eternal happiness. All Heavenly Father asks us to do is those things that will make us happy. There is a difference between happiness and instant gratification. Happiness or joy lasts for ever, and instant gratification is fleeting, and has negative consequences. I know with out a shadow of doubt, and from every fiber of my being that Jesus is the Christ, and our only way back to the Father. I know that Joseph Smith saw the Father and the Son, and that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth in its fullness through the prophet Joseph Smith. I know that the Prophet Joseph Smith was also given the the same priesthood held by Moses and the other previous prophets, and that this same priesthood has been passed down the the current Prophet Thomas S. Monson.

How I live my faith

I have worked in many leadership and teaching positions in church, and try to do all that is asked of me. I have been a scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster, committee member, and committee chairman.
