Hi I'm Katie Chen

I have three kids, three degrees, and speak three languages.

About Me

My husband is Chinese and retaining culture and language for our children is important to us so we speak to our children in Chinese. They speak great in both English and Chinese at five and three years old. Speaking another language constantly is hard, especially since I didn't grow up speaking or even hearing Mandarin Chinese, but it's amazing to see how the kids have been able to communicate with others, in both Chinese and English. I also went on a mission for this church to Spain and was able to learn Spanish, though now it gets muddled in my head with Chinese. I love that I am able to understand other cultures and see other modes of living. I have a lot of things that I love to do and a lot of goals in life. Previously I have accomplished three marathons and also some triathlons. I've done martial arts (each to a small degree in Judo, karate, and kung fu) and have learned musical instruments. I love to read, journal, blog, and create photo albums of my family. All in all, I'm not extremely talented in anything really, though I love to learn new things and master what I can in the time I have. As I've gotten older, I realize more and more how important the relationships that we make with others are.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents are also Mormon and I was raised in this church. In fact, my grandpa was the first bishop of the ward and also helped to build the chapel that we met in while I was younger. When I was growing up, I had a lot of family members and cousins that helped me presevere in the faith. As I got older, I realized that I needed to build my own testimony even stronger. College was tough at first as I had to find my own identity as a real person. As I suffered the normal growing pains of making mistakes and getting better, I realized that I really had to rely on the Lord for help. In turn, the Lord gave me comfort. I had always felt the truth of the gospel in my life, but a big testimony builder for me was on my mission. I hadn't really understood until that point how different our church was in some ways, until I started preaching about the Book of Mormon and also Joseph Smith and his first vision. Growing up I identified myself as a Christian because Christ is at the center of our beliefs. But when I started understanding the entire magnitude of our message one day while praying, I had a spiritual feeling that witnessed to me that it was all true. It filled me with joy and wonder. How amazing is this gospel and how important is this message to the entire world! It can be hard when not everyone understands or even respects your beliefs, but the important thing is that I believe in this church and it gives me comfort and joy in living the standards of the gospel.

How I live my faith

Now that I have three children, I remember that there is a season in life for everything and though there is less time for my own pursuits in this season, I love helping my children develop into well rounded and compassionate human beings. I love being in a congregation that is like a family. We are all able to help each other. Right now I work with the youth, and I have enjoyed it and am also learning some tips for when my own children grow up. It's a great feeling to be able to continue to learn and grow while serving in the church.
