Hi I'm Matt Smith

I grew up in Souther California. I am a chemical engineer, devoted father and husband. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I come from a family of seven brother (no sisters) and grew up in southern California. I love to play with my son and wife at the park, beach, etc. whenever I have spare time. Other activities and hobbies that I am involved with include skateboarding, surfing, hiking, traveling, etc. I am a chemical engineer who works for an environmental consulting company, which designs and builds systems to clean up contamination for major oil companies and large industrial facilities. In 2010, I served on the environmental emergency response group for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as a leader for all environmental and compliance sampling.

Why I am a Mormon

I have grown up a Mormon, but it wasn't until I was in high school preparing to serve a full-time mission for my church, that I truly came to know for myself the truthfulness of this church. As it states in the Book of Mormon under Moroni 10:4-5, "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." As I prayed to know whether this church was the true church or not, I felt a peaceful and warm feeling that I knew could not be anything but the Holy Ghost confirming the truthfulness of the gospel. From that moment on, I decided to fill my heart and mind with the messages of Christ. This, in turn, caused my faith to grow and gave me a greater desire to follow Him and live His teachings. As a follower of Christ and benefactor of his teachings and atonement, I try to emulate my life after His and share the same conviction to the answer that I received the night I prayed to know the truth. I bear my solemn witness that Jesus is the Christ and that He lives. He is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. He lived a perfect life and atoned for our sins and will always be by our side if but only ask. He is our hope; He is our salvation; and He is the way and if we but repent and follow Him, he promises us eternal life.

How I live my faith

As part of the presidency of the men's group in the church, I am responsible for visiting and caring for families within our group that are in need; organizing church activities; and leading discussions and lessons. In addition, I actively participate in frequent service activities which have included cleaning up flood- and fire-damaged homes; planting trees, bushes, and flowers around the community; helping in scout service projects, etc. I see my calling in church not so much as a commission to serve, but a privilege to lift and an opportunity to bless the lives of others. As I perform my duties and service, I experience the satisfaction of having completed our tasks and find true joy. As I try to walk the pathway Jesus walked, I discovered that "He is more than the babe in Bethlehem, more than the carpenter’s son, more than the greatest teacher ever to live, [but I became] to know Him as the Son of God, our Savior and our Redeemer." As I came to learn, "there are feet to steady, hands to grasp, minds to encourage, hearts to inspire, and souls to save" and would I not want someone to help me in times of need? So why would I not help others and receive the blessings of eternity?
