Hi I'm Pedro

I love Japan. I love philosophy and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a husband, father of one and a proud American, living in Japan. I love languages. I speak English and Spanish fluently and am conversant in both Mandarin and Japanese. I also love to watch movies and read books, especially books on philosophy and science. I'm really into East Asian philosophy, Zen and Taoism. I'm getting into Continental philosophy; Marion, Derrida and Latour. I'm also a huge mixed martial arts fan, have been since I was a kid. I love Star Wars.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because so-called "mormonism", when lived, makes me happier.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith in two principle ways: 1) I try to keep the golden rule. 2) I try to focus my attention on the present moment.

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

The best portrait ever painted of our Heavenly Father is found in the Book of Moses. Enoch speaks with God, face to face, and is perplexed when he sees God weeping; he asks "How is it that thou canst weep, seeing thou art holy, and from all eternity to all eternity?" God answers: "Behold these thy brethren; they are the workmanship of mine own hands, and I gave unto them their knowledge, in the day I created them; and in the Garden of Eden, gave I unto man his agency; and unto thy brethren have I said, and also given commandment, that they should love one another, and that they should choose me, their Father; but behold, they are without affection, and they hate their own blood"(Moses 7:32-33). God is not a cosmic dictator; He is a loving Father. We have no reason to be afraid of Him but have every reason to love Him with all of our heart, because His own heart beats in sympathy with our own. He loves us and wants us to be like Him. Heavenly Father is glorified and exalted, the same as Jesus Christ. Both the Father and the Son have perfect and immortal bodies of flesh and bone. They have feelings and can relate to us the same way our earthly parents and siblings can. We are to God what a baby is to his earthly father, made in his image but infinitely less intelligent or powerful. Like a child away at school, our Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to come back home. He sent our Big Brother, Jesus Christ, to both prepare and show us the way home. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

No, Mormons do not worship Joseph Smith Jr. Mormons worship God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith Jr is simply one of many great, yet imperfect, messengers of God. He is a modern-day Moses. He is a prophet, commissioned to restore the gospel of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

Life is a school; and it is a school that we have freely chosen to attend. Before this life, we lived with God. We and God had a common desire for us to be as He is.To do that, we would have to come down to a world where good and evil have equal sway, lacking the memory of our heavenly life, so that we can be tested(Abraham 3:22-26). Because our choices are free from the compulsion that comes from seeing the eternal punishments and eternal rewards of our actions, the choices we make are reflective of what we truly desire most.
