Hi I'm Jonathan

I'm an Eagle Scout. I love doing family history. I am serving a mission in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for two years and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

One of the main things that I enjoy doing is working on finding out and learning about the lives of my ancestors. There is so much for me to learn from them and the trials that they endured. As well, I play in my school's jazz and symphonic bands, and I have been playing instruments since the fourth grade. After serving a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rio de Janeiro, starting in August of 2013, I plan to go to Brigham Young University to major in Neuroscience, and eventually go into the field of medicine as a doctor.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was at the age of 15 I realized that I needed to start going to church, and it was a feeling that kept resonating in my mind and heart. I felt that I just needed to go and fortunately, I had a friend who was and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I told her about the desires I had to go to church and she offered a simple invitation for me to come with her that Sunday. The first time I stepped into a church building, I knew that something was different and good about this Church. I was filled with a joy that seemed to come from out of nowhere and I went to church the following Sunday as well, and that is when I met the missionaries for the first time. We set up an appointment and it was during that discussion that the told me about the marvelous visitation of the Father and the Son to Joseph Smith. They taught me concerning the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and invited me to read and pray about the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. I was amazed that they didn't want me to take their word for it that it was true, but they truly wanted me to find out for myself that it was true. It was in the next few days that I prayed to know of the book's truthfulness and it was clear to me, by the joyous and peaceful feelings that came from the Holy Ghost, that the Book of Mormon was true, that Jesus is the Christ, and that Joseph Smith was indeed a prophet. Ever since that time I have known that the restored gospel is true and that we are still guided today by modern prophets and apostles.

How I live my faith

Living my faith always begins with the simple things which include prayer and scripture study. The scriptures are a foundation of truth that allows me to make better decisions throughout the day and prayer allows us to opportunity to converse directly with our Heavenly Father. Along with that comes service in my family and in the Church. I try the best I can to faithfully and willingly do what my parents ask so that I can honor them. In church I serve in the family history center as a consultant, which allows me to help others to be able to do their own genealogy. As well, I serve in a calling which allows me to help young men who hold the priesthood and are normally from ages 16 to 18 to fulfill their duties and responsibilities.

How can we stop the spread and influence of pornography?

Jonathan
I think the most simple but also the most effective way for us to stop the spread and influence of pornography is starting in our own homes. The world in which we live today, especially in the rising generation, portrays pornography to a normal thing but we certainly know that it is something that destroys families and individuals. When we take the simple steps of preventing these things from getting into our homes, and especially affecting the lives of young children, we will see the influence of pornography wane. As well, we need to raise our voices in support of officials in both local and national governments that are actively against pornography, and do all that we personally can to influence the lives of our friends, family, and communities so that they too can have the influences of pornography wane in their lives, and ultimately, in our nations. How can I know Mormonism is true?

Jonathan
Because our Heavenly Father loves all of His children, He has provided a way that everyone can know the truthfulness of the restored gospel. True answers come from our Father in Heaven as we pray directly to Him for wisdom; read, study, and ponder the scriptures; and act obediently upon the knowledge we have gained from Him. As we learn from the New Testament, the Holy Ghost will bear witness to our hearts and souls the truthfulness of the gospel through His fruits, which are: " love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, [and] temperance" (Galatians 5:22-3). When we have those feelings, we can know that the gospel is true because "all things which are good cometh of God" (Moroni 7:12), and all of those feelings are good. Once we recognize that Heavenly Father has confirmed the truthfulness of the gospel to our hearts and minds through the Holy Ghost, then we will know that Mormonism is true. Show more Show less
