Hi I'm Calvin Petersen

I'm an American, a rock-climber and a Mr. Potato Head collector. I love my car. I love talking with people! And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Calvin and I'm 21 years old. Everyone who knows me knows that, more than anything else in life, I love the 1974 Volkswagen Beetle that I restored with my dad. When I'm not fixing or driving my car, I love spending time with my family and friends by going rock-climbing, camping, and going to the lake and mountains by my house. I'm a happy and determined person and I love getting to know new people! I love learning new things and am currently learning to speak Spanish in Mendoza, Argentina through my service as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church). Although I love my car, above all I love my Savior Jesus Christ. He has helped me become the happy person that I am today. Because of this, I want to serve and do all that I can so that my brothers and sisters get to know Jesus Christ better and so that they can achieve a greater happiness.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because it makes me happy! Is it possible to always be happy in spite of challenges and problems? I found in the Mormon Church that the answer is yes, it is possible! Although I'm still young, I've already had a pretty complicated life. What has impacted me the most is my parents' divorce when I was only 6 years old. I've also seen the tragic results of drunkenness, suicide, violence, and drugs. Because of these things, although my parents raised me well, I didn't have very much confidence in myself nor in other people, and I wasn't a very happy person. When I was 17, one of my friends invited me to a Mormon youth activity. Even though I was baptized in the Mormon Church as a child, that night with my friend, I felt different that I had before. There was an inner happiness and peace so enormous that I couldn't believe it. In that moment, something told me, “This church is good. You have to learn more!” And so I did. I read the Book of Mormon. I went to church. I prayed to understand what God wanted for me. And in the process, I came to know my Savior Jesus Christ and the sacrifice He made for me. This changed my life completely. Now I understand what I have to do to be happy. I have confidence in myself because I understand that I am a child of God and I trust in others because I understand forgiveness. Although trials will come, I'm not worried because I know that I have a Big Brother who went through all of these trials for me and that I can trust in Him.

How I live my faith

Attending church, reading the scriptures and praying daily is easy. What is truly hard is living your faith. To me, living my faith means being more like Jesus Christ every day. It means being happy and treating others well. I know that I still have many weaknesses and imperfections and that I often make mistakes, but what the Mormon Church teaches is that we can improve and overcome these things together with the Savior. Something I like to do to live my faith is ask myself in the day's difficult decisions, “What would Jesus do?” This helps me to be more humble, more loving, more patient, more obedient to the commandments, and serve those around me. I've noticed that when I'm not focusing on myself, I'm happier and can recognize the presence of God more in my life. Right now as a missionary, I can be happy every day by serving the people of Argentina as a representative of Jesus Christ and inviting everyone to come unto Him.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

Calvin Petersen
As in ancient times (see Leviticus 11:2-47), in our time God has given us a Law of Health called the Word of Wisdom. This law helps us to have healthier bodies and cleaner spirits. It tells us that we should eat grains, fruits, vegetables, and meat. It also tells us that, in order to care for our health, we shouldn't take into our bodies alcohol, tabaco, coffee and tea, and other addictive substances like illegal drugs . In my life, I've seen the blessings of the Word of Wisdom. I've noticed that, when I'm obedient to this law, I feel so much better physically as well as spiritually. God promises blessings to everyone who obeys this law. I invite you to try it and to live the Word of Wisdom so that you can also have the blessings I've received in my life. Show more Show less
