Hi I'm Bethany Bates

I'm an artist, I'm a nerdfighter, and I'm a Mormon!

About Me

When I was little, my mom raised me as a single parent. We didn't have a lot of money but I had a great childhood spending time with her. She got remarried when I was still young, and our family has now grown to six; two brothers and one sister. In the middle of high school I moved from my hometown of nine years, to a little town in Virginia. At the time, I felt depressed and upset to have to start all over with making friends in a whole new school in an area foreign to me, but I now understand the great blessing of our move. We had been able to sell our home in one day, which in this economy is certainly a miracle. Though it took me quite a while to make friends, I did eventually develop strong, unforgettable relationships. This move also allowed me to grow closer to my family in a way that wouldn't have been possible before. Ever since I can remember, I've loved art. I've been so blessed with the raw talent and perseverance that will one day give me the opportunity to share my inspiration and vision with many others. I am so happy with the art that is overflowing in the world. Everywhere you look, you can find something creative and beautiful. I'm so excited to be starting college, where I will study art and undoubtedly learn more than I ever could on my own.

Why I am a Mormon

I love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The word religion is a completely inappropriate word for describing the Church, because it is far, far more than that. It's not a religion but a way of life. The LDS church is founded on the family, and it's sole purpose is to bring happiness. Isn't that awesome? Lots of people are intimidated by the high standards and values that Mormons live by, but following these have kept me from the self-inflicted pain and heartache that many have gone through. In high school, or I guess anywhere in life, it's hard not to take the easy way out or to go with the crowd. However, when I see young people like me having to deal with the consequences of drug, alcohol, and tobacco addiction, pregnancy, or social pressures to fit in, it makes me sad. No one needs to alter themselves to be happy. I love being a part of the Mormon community because we get to serve in so many ways! I can be a part of an organized service project, and I can serve by just being a friend.

How I live my faith

I love the Church because it is, and always has been, a collaborative effort. Everyone works together to help one another. Instead of having a paid pastor teach to the congregation, the members of the congregation each have a part in the teaching and I love being a part of that!
