Hi I'm Cheyenne

I'm a Teach For America alumnus and teacher. I'm a mother. I speak Mandarin Chinese. And I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a wonderfully eclectic, large liberal college town. I was surrounded by great friends from a host of different ethnic and religious backgrounds. As one of the few LDS kids in any of my schools growing up, my friends came to know me as someone who believed in God and had certain moral values. Once they knew my values, they actually helped me live them & many supported me in my choices. In college, I decided halfway through to serve a full-time LDS mission. I met my husband shortly before graduating from college, then went on to join Teach For America. I learned that the most profound way to influence the world is through teaching. Now, as the mother to four spirited and incredible kids, I've come to know that the most important and impactful teaching I will ever do will be within the walls of my own home.

Why I am a Mormon

Chances are that you and I may have a lot of beliefs in common. I believe in a supreme Creator. I am a Christian. I believe in the Godhead as Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit as three separate beings who are one in purpose. I believe I have a spirit within my body that was created by Heavenly Father, making me his spirit daughter. That links me to everyone on earth. We're spirit brothers and sisters, and this greatly influences how I look at and treat others. I believe God has a plan for us and our happiness. Since we're his children, family is central to his plan. Thus, marriages and the relationships between parents & children are set-up and set-apart by God. I believe Jesus Christ and His atonement for all mankind are what make God's plan possible. As a teacher, I quickly learned that structure and patterns make learning so much easier. God set-up structures and patterns to help us navigate this life and successfully make it back to live with him again. Part of those structures are the church Jesus Christ established while he was on the earth. As the apostle Paul detailed, there are prophets, teachers, pastors, and so forth. I believe that the priesthood authority and Christ's church have been restored in their entirety on earth, and that we have living prophets on the earth today. I believe in additional scripture as companions to the Holy Bible. The sometimes rough seas of life that we all experience have been calmed, and a passageway through has been shown to me over and over again as I study the scriptures and the words of the living prophets.

How I live my faith

My husband and I find great joy in serving. We're involved in both community and church service, and our children tag right along. They learn great lessons about dedication, hard work, and find for themselves a love for helping others. I'm currently serving in cub scouts & help coordinate the volunteer cleaning efforts to keep our church building sparkling each week. In the past, I've been a leader of the youth, played the piano, and conducted music. My husband is currently the bishop of our ward. All church positions and service opportunities in our church are voluntary and unpaid. We don't move up, we just move around. :) We believe that when our leaders extend an invitation to serve in a certain capacity, that invitation is ultimately coming from God. I show my love to God and to others inside and outside of the church by serving them. We know that families are most important, and our church service complements caring for our families. Each person helps with unique talents to strengthen each other in the faith of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As the apostle Paul said, we are all part of the body of Christ and each member is important.
