Hi I'm Ericka

I'm a stay at home mom with a 2 yr old. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a stay at home mom. I love sewing, knitting, and crocheting (anything crafty). I also deal with chronic migraines.

Why I am a Mormon

An ex-boyfriend from my home town was Mormon and his family still is. They made me think a lot about my faith (I was catholic at the time) and why it was so inconsistent. I had problems with the fact that we weren't encouraged to read the bible, even though religion is based on the bible. When I moved to Texas, I met a mormon friend at work who encouraged me to come to church with her and read the book of Mormon. I liked that every time I went to church with her, everyone treated me like family and bent over backwards to help me. I started meeting with the missionaries and learning more about the church. I found that a lot of the beliefs we talked about were things I had either wondered about or things that I already felt/believed on my own. It all just made sense. I got baptized in January 2008 and wound up converting the man who became my husband. We got married in the temple even though I knew it would create problems with my family. It simply didn't feel right to do it any other way. None of my family members came to my reception and there were only a few that really wanted to but my friends still made it a special day for me. My husband and I haven't had it easy starting out, but we'd be a lot worse off if we weren't members of the church and that above all tells me that we're in the right place, despite some of bridges I burned with my family when I joined the church.

How I live my faith

I'm a substitute teacher for Sunday school at church every week. Lately, I've been helping out a lot in Nursery (kids under 3 yrs). It's nice to see how much they've already picked up about church at a young age and when I get to help with the slightly older kids, I get to help teach them about the gospel and see the structure they get at Sunday school at a young age and knowing it continues into young adulthood. My Sunday school stopped when I got confirmed in 9th/10th grade. I also enjoy doing service by sewing bears for hospice. They are made from clothing which belonged to someone who recently died to help with grief. It's nice being able to help them this way.

What is the difference between attending church and the temple?

Ericka
Church is where we attend meetings every Sunday and where other church related activities are held. Anyone is welcome to go there. The temple is the "House of God" and where we perform sacred ordinances. Not all Mormons are allowed to enter the temple. We have to meet certain standards. Show more Show less
