Hi I'm Jon

I’m a programmer. I’m a theater techie. I love to learn. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I’m currently computer engineering major. I love to learn and to expand my understanding. When I’m not in the computer lab, I can usually be found in the fine art center working backstage. Computers and theater are my two loves and they mean a lot to me. I love logic based thinking and questioning. Throughout school, I always bothered my teachers by asking “why”. If I don’t know an answer, I go out and search for it. I love computers because of the interesting problems they bring up and I love to find unique solutions. The theater is my creative outlet and brings balance to my life. I particularly love lighting design and creating the mood for every scene in a play. I find much happiness working in the darkness of an empty theater. I’ve lived in lots of different places. I was born in Utah, but my mother’s medical school moved us to Wisconsin when I was 12 and then to Maine when I was 16. Moving was always a challenge, but it really shaped my interests and desires. I grew to know many different people from many backgrounds.

Why I am a Mormon

I think moving twice in my teenage years has a lot to do with my faith in God. Both times I was unsure what the future would bring and unsure why I needed to change where I called my home. I was baptized when I was 8. My whole family is members of this church, but my real conversion came from my experiences in the world. First in Wisconsin and then in Maine, I was constantly surrounded by those of other faiths (or of no faith). I love all my friends from throughout my youth and nothing brought me more sadness then seeing them come across challenges and problems. I saw many of them make decision which caused them to go down paths which brought them sadness. I was able to see a clear difference between the standard I live and the way the world said to live. I was able to see firsthand the influence of the commandments and how they bless my life. As well, I know that substances like alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and other addicting substances only bring negative consequences in the long run. I’m very grateful for the gospel and its help in my life. I’m grateful for my savior and his love for me in my life.

How I live my faith

I live my faith through living the gospel standards that I know bring me happiness. I do my best to follow my Savior’s Example of love and compassion. I try to be an example to those around me. Church attendance helps me realize how I can continue to improve. I try to stand up for my beliefs and help others find the same joy in their lives. I try to always speak kindly of those around me. I avoid harmful substances and keep my self clean from worldly sins. I am currently serving a two year mission in Taiwan. I started to do these things because of my parent’s example and desires for me, but I kept doing them because it truly brought me great happiness and joy.
