Hi I'm J. R. Stanley

I was born and spent most of my life in Texas. I grow orchids as a hobby. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am married to a lady who was born in Scotland. We have one daughter and two sons, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. After we met, I went with my girlfriend to her senior prom and bought her an orchid to wear. I fell in love with her and orchids at the same time. We have now been married a long time and I grow orchids as a hobby and am a member of an orchid society. Luckily, my wife loves orchids, too. My other hobbies are gardening and fixing things around the house and for friends. Since I retired I have more time for my hobbies.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 12 my father's business went bankrupt and we had a hard time. Dad gathered us together and we had a family prayer for the first time. He thanked the Lord we were still together, promised the Lord we would go to church and asked the Lord to help him find a job. Dad had applied to teach a veteran's school but was told the job was filled by a man coming from Arizona. We went to the Mormon church in the nearest town that Sunday. Some of the bretheren gave dad suggestions about where to look for a job and Monday he started back to town to check out the leads. As he passed the veteran's school, he said a voice came into his head, "Turn around, go back." Without arguing, he did as the voice suggested. The owner of the school was standing in the driveway. Dad asked how the new teacher was doing and he replied, " That fellow came in this morning, got out and looked around and said, 'I can't live here. I'm going back to Arizona', and left". Dad got the job, we got a testimony of prayer and we were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Lattrer-Day-Saints.

How I live my faith

My calling in the church is High Priest Group Leader. We are part of a stake quorum of high priests. Some of our duties are visiting assigned families in our ward as home teachers and helping them with familiy and church responsibilities. We also work with missionaries fellowshipping investigators. Sometimes, we are called upon to help with disaster relief. Hurricanes are frequent visitors in the area and we have worked to help our neighbors of all faiths as far away as New Orleans.
