Hi I'm Richard Huey

I joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 46 yrs ago when I was in the US Air Force stationed on Midway Island.

About Me

I graduated from VA Tech, worked for duPont in Waynesboro and Richmond, VA for a year before going to Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama for pilot training. Spent a i-1/2 years at Dover AFB flying C-133 cargo planes. The C-133 was a large turbo-prop that was under powered and unstable. Only 50 were built and 13 fell out of the sky with no survivors. My first child was born in Richmond. The next two were born while stationed in Dover. While stationed in Dover the missionaries of the Church knocked on our door and we listened to thier message and found it interesting but we were reluctant to go to one of their meetings. But soon after a couple discussions with them I received orders transferring us to Midway Island. Of the seven Air Force officers on Midway, two were members of the Church, one of whom had served a mission, the other was a recent convert. Another of the AF officers and his family were attending the small LDS services and we did too.. After six months of discussions we were baptized in the Pacific Ocean. About six months after we were baptized most of the other LDS families were transferred leaving us as the (weak) core of the Midway Island Group. If you want to know more, just ask.

Why I am a Mormon

Let me just list a few of the reasons...mostly practical. 1. Mark 2:27 say, "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath." The rules related to the sabbath are for our benefit. I have found this to be true for each of the commandments. 2. We are encouraged to have a years supply of food and, where possible, fuel. Complying with this guidance provide a feeling of security and when out of work, provides a cushion. 3. We are encouraged to stay out of debt. 4. We have a health code, "The Word of Wisdom." It tells us not to smoke, not to drink alcohol, coffee and tea. To eat meat sparingly, to eat grains, especially wheat. Folloowing this guidance has resutled in good health and saving money...wheat is much less expensive than meat. 5. The last verses in the old testiment, Malachi 4:5-6. I will send you Elijah...and he shall turn...the heat of the children to their fathers. Searching and finding my ancestors has proven to provide very satisfying experiences. The experiences have been both interesting and uplifting. 6. There are others reaasons, I will add more later....

How I live my faith

In my 46 years in the Church I have had numerous assignments ("callings").Sunday school teacher for youth and adults. employment specialist in partnership with my wife, financial clerk for our congregation, greeter, men's group leader, Bishop's counselor, Boy Scout merit badge conselor and others.
