Hi I'm George McDowell

I'm a Mormon. I'm a retired Air Force officer (26 years), now serving at Joint Base Charleston.

About Me

I started my 26 year Air Force career enlisted as an aeromedical technician, then as a Pilot, C-141s, then a staff tour, even a year as Deputy CC down in Ecuador because I knew (enough) Spanish, then C-17 at Charleston, SC. During a short deployment to Al Udied, I put my name in the hat to be a Mission Support Group Deputy CC, which was supposedly good for potential O-6. Shortly after returning I found out that I'd been selected, but to Minot ND (a previous Wing CC who was at another base in ND recommended me?!). I wondered why that couldn't have been Hawaii, but realize now it was God protecting and guiding me. Unbenounst to me, my wife at that time had been up to other things that led to our divorce, which was tough, but I know now was the best thing for me. It took me a while to get over, but it also helped me, over time, to come to pray with an open heart and contrite spirit. I had a good friend up at Minot who was LDS, and we talked, and I realize I also had previosly had many friends who were Mormon (LDS), who were the best people in my life (some of whom I didn't even know were LDS). Through that time, in prayer, and asking, I KNOW this is the true church. I know that if you pray in earnest, the holy spirit will guide you to truth. My life has been blessed with this knowledge. I've since met a wonderful woman, who became LDS shortly after I did. We follow Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, and his loving example in life.

Why I am a Mormon

When I came to a point in life when I truly prayed to God with a humble heart and contrite spirit on the truthfulness of this church, I knew, through the Holy Spirit, that this was the true church. As follower's of the teachings of Jesus Christ, the more I learn and read the more I know the truth. There are answers to fundamental life questions answered through the scriptures, and through the Book of Mormon, (another testament of Jesus Christ), and the prophet here on Earth NOW. God did not just close the book and leave us behind, he live. God wants us to have joy in this life; to gain the experience we'll need. The LDS chuch isn't some 'new' church, it is Christ's church restored on Earth, with the same organization. We believe in the Old and New Testaments, and Jesus Christ is our Lord, our guide. We believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, as the God head. Through the Prophet Joseph Smith the church was restored by God, and we have a Prophet now to help guide us. Having this guidance, and the guideance of the Holy Spirit has enriched my life, and that of my family, in ways I'd never imagined.

How I live my faith

I believe the best way to live my faith, and to serve, is by example. By doing. Being LDS is not always easy, especially in a world filled with so much work being done by the adversary. I, along with most of the LDS I know, try our best daily to live a Christ-like, Christ-centered life. To obey the commandments to the utmost of our ability, to follow the direction of scripture and our prophet, from things like not swearing, not drinking alcohol or ingesting other harmful substances, not smoking. It's about loving God with all your heart, mind and sole, loving one another, obeying the commandments, but also in knowing the great sacrifice Jesus Christ made for all of us. Being repentant, being baptized by one with the authority to do so, receivig the Holy Spirit as a constant companion, and, because we're human, trying our best to avoid sin, but renewing our covenants through sacrament. I live my faith the best I can, by trying to live a life that God would have me live. Loving my neighbor. Avoiding bad things, and should I do them, be making a constant effort to truly eliminate them from my life. God knows the bad and good that people do. I try to live my life not to be judged by others, but by God. God loves us deeply, and wants what is best for us, and one of the greatest things he blessed us all with while on this Earth, is the ability to choose. Live by trying your best to always choose the right, no matter what.
