Hi I'm Dave

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently serving as Mission President in the Madagascar Antananarivo Mission. My wife, Anna, and I started our mission in July 2012 and will finish in June 2015. I am a retired oral and maxillofacial surgeon. My wife and I have lived and raised our family in Clovis, California for the past 35years. I am a graduate of Brigham Young University and UCLA School of Dentistry. I did my surgery training at the UCLA Hospital. In addition to private practice I have been involved with for many years with my partners in the directing the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program at the University Medical Center in Fresno, California. I enjoy family, travel, sports and flying as an instrument rated private pilot.

Why I am a Mormon

This experience has been and continues to be a powerful reminder of the profound changes that accepting and embracing the Gospel of Jesus Christ brings in peoples lives. We have witnessed many spiritual transformations among the people of these countries as they have committed their lives to being disciples of the Savior. I have known it was true since my youth. I know it so much more deeply now.

How I live my faith

Anna and I were living a semiretired life commuting between California and Utah when we received a request for an interview from Elder Dallin Oaks a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. A couple of weeks after that interview we received a call from the President of the church to preside full-time over the mission in Madagascar for three years. After a preparation period of about 10 months (in which we had to wind up all of our business affairs move out of our home and place everything in storage plus resurrect some very rusty French) we headed off for the adventure of a lifetime. The Madagascar Mission covers the islands of the Indian Ocean, principally Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius. Madagascar is a third world country about the size of Texas with 22 million people. Malagasy is the predominate language with French as a second language. Reunion is a department of France and is very first world. It is like an upscale Kawaii. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth. There are no natural beaches but there mountains that rise out of the ocean to over 10,000 feet. Mauritius is a separate island country with 1.2 million people. It has a large Hindu influence. The principal languages are French, English and Creole. It is a combination of first and second world. It is surrounded by coral reefs and has beautiful beaches. It is quite like Tahiti. The mission stretches over 1000 miles and we are constantly traveling, mostly by air.
