Hi I'm Jared

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am an Australian, studying a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in the USA. I am married to an American, who is doing a PhD in Geology. We have been married for almost a year and don't yet have children, but plan to after we graduate. I have always loved learning about space and have wanted to be an astronaut since i was little. I have always loved building things, playing outside, climbing trees, playing sport, camping and having adventures. I lived in Australia all my life until i was 19, when i volunteered for missionary service and was sent to Florida to serve a 2 year mission. I loved the people of Florida and after returning to Australia to live, i visited Florida a number of times to see the people from my mission. I studied Chemistry and Genetics in Queensland, Australia, before travelling through Central America, where i climbed volcanoes, trekked through the jungle, and surfed. On my way back to Australia, i stopped in Florida for a visit and whilst there, decided to apply for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. After 2 years in Australia, and a series of miraculous events, i was accepted into the program and moved to Florida to study. My wife and I will be graduating soon and looking for jobs. I hope to work for an aerospace company and be a part of space exploration.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been a Mormon all of my life. There have been a few periods in my life where i was less active in my participation at church, but for the most part i have been an active member all of my life. I am a Mormon for one main reason; because i know that The Book of Mormon is true. I have read The Book of Mormon countless times and every time i have read it i have felt something unique, something i do not feel from reading any other book or from doing any other activity. It is something good, and something powerful and it is unique to the Book of Mormon. I am a very scientific person, and as such, i question everything. I am not one to believe anything until it has been systematically proven to me. And I believe the Book of Mormon to be true. Through the Book of Mormon, i have come to know of the reality of spiritual things. Of the power of things that cannot be explained by science, or physically experimented on, yet are true, and can be spiritually experimented on. Through the Book of Mormon i have come to know of the reality of the Savior Jesus Christ. This Book is focussed entirely on Him, and His teachings. By extension, because i know that the Book of Mormon is true, i know that the Prophet Joseph Smith, who translated it, was a true prophet. I have received a complete witness that Joseph Smith told the truth and that he was a prophet of God. I know that. I also know, from experience, that the Priesthood of God has been restored to the earth and that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is operated by it, and through revelation from God to a living prophet today. I have experienced the power of the priesthood. It is real. I have been through the Temple. It's teachings are true. Families can be sealed together for eternity there. There is a great peace that comes through membership and participation in the Church that is led by revelation from Jesus Christ to his Prophet who is alive today and who speaks to us, and guides us. It is true.

How I live my faith

I have been asked to work with the Young Men of our church, aged 12-18. I teach them about priesthood service, about serving members and the community at large, and how to try and emulate the Savior Jesus Christ. On Tuesday nights we have activities together, which often include sport and/or service. I participate in helping the boys from our congregation who are Boy Scouts, in achieving their goals and purposes. I have previously worked with the Men's organisation aged 18-40, with the Young Single Adults aged 18-30 and taught the 10 and 11 year old children. I served a 2 year, full-time, voluntary mission in Florida when i was 19. I worked with people in the community who are not Mormon and provided service for them, throughout my mission and since then, also. I give to charity and i care about people.
