Hi I'm Layne

I'm a die-hard cyclist, cultural explorer, storyteller and a Latter-day Saint.

About Me

When I'm not on my bicycle I'm with my family, or into a book. I taught myself to read. Mom couldn’t always spare time, but I wanted adventure! Those books kept calling . . . calling . . . calling. So I cracked the code of written language and immersed myself in books. Eventually I nabbed a PhD in Communication and Performance Studies. I'm Daddy to the 8 best kids on the planet, and husband to an angel. Her biggest mistake was "the deal." While dating she said, "Layne, if you and I get married here's the deal. I'll follow you anywhere and let you do whatever you want, as long as I get to stay home with the kids." She kept her promise. We moved to California, where she finally saw the ocean. We moved to Ecuador with our 7-month daughter for study abroad. We moved to Arkansas then Arizona for grad school. We cycled across America with our then 7 kids (me on bike, them in RV). Yeah, I owe her for eternity, and she doesn't let me forget. Professionally I design and guide leadership courses on the Hero's Journey.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because like you, I sought the truth. I listened to the opinions of others then asked God, and He answered...not just once, but repeatedly. I am a Mormon because I've tested the doctrine. I've actually tested the principles, experimenting like a scientist (minus the white lab coat), and those principles have passed muster. I am a Mormon because although I was born and raised in the faith, like you I had questions. We're remarkably alike in that. And we know that answers lead to more questions. That's the beauty! I know from personal experience that Father in Heaven wants us to ask questions, He wants to bestow knowledge upon our hearts, minds, and very souls. But He can't if we don't inquire. My rack of journals is packed with questions, insights, discoveries and (yes) personal revelations attesting to God's love and the divinity of the Gospel as revealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I invite you to discover with me.

How I live my faith

I love the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Every morning, usually before anything else, I immerse into the scriptures, seeking personal revelation for self and family. Those 30-60 minutes are like opening the curtains, giving added Son light. One of my favorite scriptures says "That which is of God is light, and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light, and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day." I work with leaders of youth, and it's energizing! Servant leadership--that's our hallmark--all aimed at developing heroic leaders. We clean up canal banks. We visit the sick and elderly. We play dodgeball and go hiking. Through it all we laugh, cry, and rejoice in life.
