Hi I'm John

I am in the Navy and I am a Mormon.

About Me

I am active duty Navy and have been for the last 24 years. I spent the first 12 years driving submarines. The next 12 years have been spent fixing them. We have lived in all four corners of the United States and Hawaii. My favorite tour was as the Chief Engineer on board the USS George Washington, CVN73 stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. I am married with three children

Why I am a Mormon

When I was a Junior in high school my father told me that he had been transferred to a new town in northern Idaho. I felt that I needed to know if the gospel was true. If it was then I should honor my father and mother as stated in the scriptures. If the gospel wasn't true then I could stay at the football coaches house and play football my senior year. I got up early one Saturday morning and went into the woods to pray. I had a sweet peaceful feeling enter my heart and I knew that indeed the gospel was true. I knew that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I knew that God lives. My conversion was more like watching a sunrise, little by little over the years my testimony had been growing. Then just like after the dawn and the sun is in the sky you can recognize the sun is up, I recognized that my testimony grown. I know with all my heart that the Jesus is the Christ and that his church has been restored in this day and age.

How I live my faith

I find strength and meaning in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Understanding my place as a son of God has helped me through many difficult times. I have traveled the world as part of my assignments in the Navy. I know that God loves all of his children. I know that I am blessed when I keep his commandments. When I made the decision to join the Navy I made a personal commitment never to swear. It has been difficult at times to communicate because it seems that some sailors don't understand if you are not swearing at them. I don't swear because it is part of my commitment to act like Christ. My personal definition of being Christian is to do what Jesus would do. To act as he would act and to love as he would love. I have 11 deployments in the Navy. A deployment is a time when the ship leaves for a period of several months or more to conduct missions. The longest deployment was six months the shortest was three. Each time I leave I am comforted to know that families are forever.
