Hi I'm Kate

I'm a jazz pianist and singer pursuing a doctoral degree in music - jazz studies specifically. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a doctoral candidate in Jazz Studies with plans to have a career as a full-time college professor and frequent performing jazz musician. I am a jazz pianist and singer who has been married to my bass player (and best friend) for ten years. We have two chihuahuas that help us de-stress from fourteen hour days at school!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born to a family that is active in the church and was raised attending church meetings every Sunday. When I was seven years old, my brother (three years old at the time) was in a serious car accident and was in the hospital for several months. It was during this time, at a young age, that I witnessed the strength of the church in my family's life. We prayed and fasted as a family, extended family, and ward for my brother's recovery and watched as he surpassed all expectations his doctors and nurses had. I learned at the age of seven that Heavenly Father listens to our prayers and answers them. Later in my life, I was faced with my own personal challenges and decisions regarding my testimony and beliefs. It's not easy being a jazz musician and a Mormon - I had to make a conscious decision that I could do both and that I would do both. Through prayer, scripture study, and the blessings of the temple, I have come to know that this is His true church and that I am blessed to be part of it.

How I live my faith

Being a Mormon can be very challenging for an active musician, as we are frequently on the road for gigs and other work. I strive to be an active member by attending church meetings whenever I can. I rely on my visiting teachers, who are very patient and kind to me. I also rely on the bishop, who is a true friend and confidant - he understands that while my husband and I can't be there every Sunday, we are always making efforts to be as involved as possible with the members of the ward. I have recently found a renewed faith in the blessings that can be received by regular temple attendance. My husband and I have made a goal to attend at least once a month and this has made changes in my heart and attitude. Our relationship is stronger and I find myself contemplating the temple and Heavenly Father's blessings on a daily basis. This has led to more frequent prayers which has led me closer to the Lord.
