Hi I'm Janis

I grew up in Southern California. I have lived in Virginia for 15 years. I am a High School English Teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a mother of four grown children and a grandmother of two adorable girls. I graduated from college at the age of 38 with a teaching degree. I taught high school english for 7 years and now work as a substitute teacher. I also help out at my husband's engineering firm a few days a week. All of my children live across the country, so my husband and I do quite a bit of traveling. I grew up in Southern California but now live in the east, where I enjoy the beautiful seasons. I enjoy quilting, gardening and reading good books. I also enjoy group exercise classes at our YMCA and I have taken up running again. My husband and I ran in a ten-miler last fall and, though we came in pretty close to the end, were just happy to finish!

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into a Mormon family. Growing up, I regularly attended church and all the activities and functions that went with it. Even as a child, I recognized that the Gospel brought me joy. I have had numerous opportunities to study and question doctrine and principles that I was taught as a child. I have found that the more I study, the more understanding and gratitude I have for the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. For me, it's not just a tradition or something that my parents expect me to do. I have chosen my faith based on personal experiences. I am learning all the time and as I do, I feel a peace that can only come with the truth and light of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith every day. I have served in the church for about 35 years. I try to stay involved in the church and the community. I've done everything from leading the music for small children to teaching a class to teenagers at 6:00 in the morning to delivering meals on wheels to the elderly. I love people and am constantly learning and growing from my associations with those of all different backgrounds. I believe that when we serve others, it is harder to wallow in our own weaknesses.
