Hi I'm Maddy

I can break it down on the dance floor, I'm a dog-lover, I'm a OC native, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hi! My name is Maddy and I'm a college student. I attend BYU-Hawaii and i LOVE IT! I was born in southern California, but after the 9/11 tragedy my dad had the opportunity to take a job in national security. We could basically choose where we wanted to live for three years, so my parents decided to go someplace extremely different from SoCal, and move to Boston Massachusetts. We loved it! Even after moving back to California, I still have a soft spot for the east coast. Im the oldest in a family of three kids. I have a younger sister and a younger brother. My sister is 15 years old, and is severely handicapped. She has cerebal palsy, and the mental capacity of a 3-month old. Growing up I have felt guilt, confusion, and anger. It has taken me years, but i realize what a blessing she is in my life. I'm constantly humbled, and I know firsthand that everyone has challenges to face in their life. I consider myself lucky, that i was chosen to be the sibling of such a special girl. BYU-Hawaii has changed my life for the better. I surfed, hitchiked the island, learned how to Cook Island dance and was a tour guide at the Polynesian Cultural Center. But most importantly, i met some of the best people in the world, and they helped to influence my decision to serve a mission. Fast forward a few months, and I got my call! I leave July 10th! I cannot wait to serve the people of El Salvador and Belize.

Why I am a Mormon

I would like to make something clear: yes, I was born in this church, but I have CHOSEN to live it. Im a Mormon because this gospel is open to anyone who is open to it. Im a member of this church because it is the gospel of the living God. He loves us as his individual children, and he knows us personally. There is nothing more comforting than that. Im a Mormon because it comforts me, because it gives me guidance in my life, and because I know it will lead me to the ultimate happiness.

How I live my faith

I live my faith on a day to day basis. I really want to change the stereotype that is so often associated with being a Mormon. Im not a polygamist, Im not a homophobe, Im not a racist and I dont live under a rock. I am proud to be a woman and I plan on having a career. I listen to music, I drink soda and I get upset sometimes. I consider myself to be a Christian. It really frustrates me when I feel like I am being judged simply because of my religion. I am a individual with a strong personality and being Mormon is a part of who I am. I live my faith by not drinking alcohol and not doing drugs. I try to choose friends that are good influences on me. When i was in high school, I woke up at 5:15 every morning to go to seminary, a church class before school for all the teenagers in the area. I have been encouraged to work hard, and I have held a job since i was 15. The best way to live my faith is to be Christlike. That includes being merciful and not judging others harshly. Jesus Christ loved everyone. What defines you as a Christian is not measured by what you wear (although that is important!), ut by the way that you treat everyone around you. I am not a perfect person, but who is? I've learned that the church isn't made up of perfect people, but its made up of good people trying to live their lives in a way to please God. And at the end of the day, that's what I'm trying to do too.
