Hi I'm Karen

I grew up in California. I currently live in Riga, Latvia. I'm a Mormon

About Me

My most notable accomplishment is being a mother to four responsible children, now a grandmother to 6 beautiful grandchildren. I used to be an elementary school librarian. I am now retired and can devote my life to family, God and serving others. My favorite things to do are garden (because it brings me great satisfaction), read (I am a voracious reader) and make heritage scrapbooks (because they will be a lasting legacy for my posterity). I love all of God's furry creatures and have a special place in my heart for dogs and horses.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up a member of the Baptist faith and learned Bible Stories in my youth. Prayer was always important to me. One day I met a young man in college who shared his testimony of his church. I was surprised that he could talk so freely about his faith to others. He asked if I would like to know more his beliefs and I said, "Yes". We talked often and I ended up inviting full- time missionaries to teach me more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and started attending Sunday meetings to find out what those "Mormons" were really like. I discovered they are just like me! Real people, with real problems. I was so impressed with the Home & Visit Teaching programs. I never remember anyone from my old church coming to visit our family. I found that Mormons are taught to serve one another and had no paid ministry. That helped me want to know more and I read the Book of Mormon. I had LOTS of questions but all of the answers came from the scriptures. I can now testify that I am a child of God and that he wants me to be happy. The Book of Mormon is another Testament and witness for Jesus Christ and his teachings. And I found happiness by being baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

How I live my faith

I worked with the youth in the church for many years. I taught scripture study courses, planned service projects and organized summer camps for young women. It is a joy to serve others! I am currently serving a church mission, with my beloved husband of 35 years, in the Baltic States. We both work with young single adults in Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, helping to strengthen their testimonies of the Savior. We have organized marriage seminars, fun activity nights, and we are priviliged to teach gospel classes. We have given up 18 months of our "normal" lives to come and serve God's children halfway across the world. And though our grandchildren are very important to us, serving God and being obedient to our prophet, is of equal importance.
