Hi I'm Jessica

I live in Hawaii. I study psychology and social work. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in a small one stop light town in Oregon. I'm the oldest of five, which meant growing up that there was always something to do. I love my family and I miss them tons! I don't get to see them very often because I currently live in Hawaii. I attend Brigham Young University-Hawaii. I absolutely love this beautiful campus filled with amazing cultures and people! I'm majoring in psychology and I want to do my graduate work in social work. I want to work with children involved in adoptions and foster care. I love running, spending time at the beach with my friends, and hiking. I also enjoy reading and just relaxing. Free time is definitely a luxury since starting college. Being so far away from home has made life very difficult at times. I've seen, done, and learned many things since moving to Hawaii; some experiences have been easier than others. The one thing that has kept me grounded through it all is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church. My parents are also both members of the Church. My grandparents were converted to the Church in the Philippines. The Church is something that I have grown up with my entire life. Some people have asked me why I do what I do. I tell them that it makes me happy. There is an indescribable joy that comes from being a member of this Church. I know where I came from, what I am doing here, and where I will go after I die. That alone brings happiness and joy to me when I see so many of my other friends struggle with these questions. It brings peace knowing that I am a beloved daughter of an all knowing God. He knows me personally. He knows my struggles, joys, pains, and victories. I love this Church because it makes me happy and brings me a joy that is unlike anything else that I have ever experienced.

How I live my faith

Here at Brigham Young University-Hawaii, I have the opportunity to be around other students that believe the same thing that I do. Being around many Latter-Day Saints or Mormons here in Hawaii is a very different environment compared to how I grew up. There weren't a lot of members my age where I am from. Many of them were much younger than I was. Throughout high school I wanted to be an example to those around me. As a disciple of Christ I wanted to be an influence for good. Many of my friends drank and partied in high school which is something that I didn't do. Many of my friends asked me why I made the choices in high school that I did. At the time they thought that they were happy. However, after high school many of my old classmates contacted me and told me about how they looked up to me and my example. They appreciated the fact that I didn't swear, drink, or party among other things that I didn't participate in. This made me even more aware of how many people watched me in high school which is something that I didn't know before. Most people will say that Mormons act differently and that they are happier. This is because we know that there is more than just this life. There is life after death where we can live with our families forever. I strive everyday to be an example and help to those around me. I want to be the best that I can be!
