Hi I'm Jon Derrick

I grew up in Downtown Salt Lake City and loved it. I am a ski instructor, I rock climb, I love to back pack, and I'm a Mormon

About Me

Life is great! I have been a ski instructor but am not currently working as one but the slopes are where it's at. I love to work on cars, I love to rock crawl, I love backpacking in the Uinta mountains, and then on the flipside, I love to play all sorts of games. I am going to be finishing up my general education at Salt Lake Community College and then will be heading to the University of Utah (Go Utes!) after that to go into mechanical engineering. Hopefully. I love my family and spending time with them! That is where the most happiness in life comes from is being able to spend time with your family. I am the youngest of three siblings, my brother is 10 years older than me and my sister is 12 years older than me! I was the surprise. Or the oops, whichever you prefer.

Why I am a Mormon

Why I'm a Mormon. I grew up in this church and have always been a part of it or at least had something to do with it. Growing up in Salt Lake City, there were a ton of Mormons (LDS) people around me but most all of my closest friends are not members of this church. I was able to see the difference between their lifestyle and mine and to get a glimspe of what life could be like. Sometimes it looks like fun! To go out and to do whatever but i have realized, through my own seeking and learning that that is not the correct path. There are so many things that this church and the Gospel of Jesus Christ shows us that bring up true happiness. Things that may seem to be boring and seemingly dull at first are the things that you, coincedently, find the most joy out of! I love this Gospel for what it teaches: forgiveness, longsuffering, patience, happiness, joy, and the one that brings the most joy to me is how to become a better man and in the future a husband and father. We are here to learn how to become more like Christ and the reason I am Mormon is because this Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is where you can best learn how to do that. It is only through the testimony of the Book of Mormon along with the Bible that you are abe to do so. 2 Corinthians 13:1 '..In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.' Two of the best witnesses are the Book of Mormon and the Bible.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by continaully trying to improve myself. Everyone makes mistakes and I am no exception. The difference between me and maybe the next person is that I know that I can be forgiven of those things no matter what it may be. By attending church to help others in this crazy place called 'Life', by serving those I come in contact with, and having fun while doing it! This is a message of happiness! So I live my faith in happiness because I am doing the things that I know that my Father in heaven is wanting me to do. "If you ain't havin' fun, you ain't doing it right.."

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Jon Derrick
In short answer, No. We are not requried to serve missions. I did for the sole reason that I wanted to go and serve others. It is one if not the hardest things i have had to do in my life and I would not have gone if I didn't want to. It is strongly encouraged because it seems to help you more than anything, but it is not required. Show more Show less
