Hi I'm Derek

I'm just a regular guy from Utah. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently a student at BYU Idaho. I love music, and play the piano and drums. I also love playing soccer, volleyball, and tennis. I'm a little bit of a nerd as well, and I love video editing and video games. I was able to serve a 2-year mission to the Philippines and share my beliefs with the most amazing, wonderful people I have ever met.

Why I am a Mormon

I know that God loves each of us. He wants us to be happy and return to live with Him after this life. I know that I have a specific purpose in this life. Although I may not be a famous or popular person, I know that I'm important to my Father in Heaven. I know that as I try my best every day to keep His commandments, I find true happiness in life; happiness that doesn't come from anything else in the entire world. I know that my family will be together forever one day. I have read the Book of Mormon, and I have prayed and asked God if it is true. I have no doubt that He has answered me. Because I know that the Book of Mormon is true, I know that Joseph Smith was called by God to translate it. I know that Joseph Smith was chosen to be a prophet of God for our time. I know that my Savior, Jesus Christ, lives. I know that he suffered and died for me and you. I love Him. That's why I'm a Mormon

How I live my faith

Right now, I am busy with school, studying takes up most of my time. I still don't exactly know what I want to do for a career. When I'm not studying, I can squeeze in some time to hang out with friends or go to the gym. I also enjoy teaching one of the Sunday-school classes in our ward's weekly meetings.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

I personally know people who struggle with same-sex attraction. I even know some members of our Church who struggle with it. While I don't completely understand it, I do know that God loves his children, and wants every single one to be happy. I understand that some people really do have feelings of attraction to the same sex, and that it is not always something they just choose to do. In my opinion, there is a difference between someone who "is gay" and someone who "struggles with same-sex attraction". I believe that the way to find true happiness is through marriage between a man and a woman. God has commanded that marriage be between a man and a woman. That is why we have different genders. Men and women were anatomically built to reproduce- with the opposite gender. I hope that people who struggle with same gender attraction will not resort to just becoming gay because they think there is no other option. If God wants us to find happiness through heterosexual marriage, He will provide a way for anyone who has that desire. It might take time and effort, but it is possible. God loves all His children, and wants them to be happy by doing the things He knows will make them happy. Show more Show less

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

The name of the church is, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". People who belonged to the ancient Church were called "Saints", so we refer to ourselves as "Latter-day Saints", or LDS. "Mormons" and "Mormonism" is simply a nickname derived from the title of "The Book of Mormon." While we don't mind being called that, we do hope people understand that we don't worship Mormon, Joseph Smith, or any other man except Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon has helped me so much in my life. Because of it, I have a greater understanding of Jesus Christ and His role as my Savior, Redeemer, and Friend. It has helped me in my personal life, and helped me overcome the challenges I face every day. Anyone who wants to know Christ will come to know Him by reading the Book of Mormon. It testifies of Christ, just as the Bible does. In fact, the Book of Mormon and the Bible support one another. While the Bible is a history of God's dealings with the people in ancient Israel, The Book of Mormon recounts the history of people in ancient America! God inspired prophets like Nephi, Alma, and Mormon just as he did with Moses and Abraham. When the time was right, God called Joseph Smith to bring forth this amazing record. Joseph Smith translated The Book of Mormon by the power and authority of God. Precious truths of the gospel that had been lost for centuries were made known again. The Book of Mormon is a true record of God. I know this because I have read and prayed about it. God is the source of all truth, and He will answer our questions if we just ask him. If we read the Book of Mormon, ponder it's message in our hearts, and ask our Heavenly Father with a real desire to know, He will tell us in our minds and hearts if it is true. Please. Read this wonderful book, and let it bring you closer to Christ as it has for me. Show more Show less
