Hi I'm Melissa

I volunteer with at-risk youth. I like to mountain bike, hike, ski, draw and write. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a wonderful family where I am one of seven children--all of them are boys except me! I learned to play games with titles such as "Tackle Town" or engaged in "dirt clod wars," which is like a snowball fight but with dirt--that's as close as we could come in in Tucson! Anyway, I was a tom-boy but I love my brothers and we're very close! Now I'm an Internal Auditor, which means it's a good day at work when I find a problem with a system or an overpayment or fraud! I'm becoming a runner and will run my first race in April 2012. I also just took up golf. I like trying new things!

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because I know the gospel of Jesus Christ is the plan God has given us to be happy! Because God loves us, His children, He wanted us to know how we can be happy, so He sent Jesus Christ to show us. By following His example, by treating others with love as He did, by forgiving, serving, and keeping God's commandments we can be happy. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and will help us become closer with Heavenly Father and Jesus as we apply its teachings. I know the Book of Mormon is true. I read it for the first time when I was 13, a chapter a day until I finished about 3 months later. When I was finished my faith in Christ was definitely stronger. I understood more about who God is. I prayed with more faith and would see answers to my prayers! When I was in college I read it again. It was a very stressful time in my life pursuing my Accounting degree and trying hard to get good grades when I decided I needed to make God the top priority in my life and to establish a relationship with Him by reading of His teachings in the Book of Mormon. As I read from it day by day, a peace came into my life that hadn't been there. I felt the Holy Spirit close by and felt the Spirit's direction more in my life. I know because I was seeking to do what was right, Heavenly Father was blessing me with more guidance. I came to know from reading the Book of Mormon that God lives and that Jesus Christ is my Savior. Even with all the stress in my life then, with school and work, and community service, etc., I felt at peace and knew God was aware of me and that I had his help close by. As I made Him my top priority, He helped me so that I still reached my goals of good grades and success in the different areas of my life. I know He loves me and loves all of His children and wants us to feel His love too! As we show faith by seeking Him, He'll draw close to us and we'll feel His love more fully!

How I live my faith

Christ taught that the greatest commandments were to love God and love thy neighbor. I think I try to live my faith in a simple way, which is to try to show love everyday by either saying kind things or doing kind things for others. I don't just hope this will happen each day, but I try to consciously cultivate these behaviors in myself so that I can be more like Christ. I serve as a Secretary in the Relief Society at church. This is an organization of women whose motto is "Charity Never Faileth." We seek to help and lift the poor and needy and the poor in spirit--the sorrowful the lonely and the afflicted. I love the opportunities we have through church to help and lift one another when we're struggling through trials. I love that in this church when we may be faltering in strength to live the gospel, others will seek us out and try to help, lift, and strengthen us again to get back on the path of discipleship. We're a giant family and try to help one another.
