Hi I'm Blake

I grew up in Ottawa, Canada. I am a Husband and Father, a basketball coach, a teacher, a food lover and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born and raised in Canada. Growing up in my family I gained a love for sports at a young age. Most of my fondest memories growing up involve sports, family, food, and travel. I spent a good portion of my childhood in a pickup truck with my dad and older brother as we raced between hockey arenas, baseball games, log running on the Ottawa river and home. I was blessed with the opportunity to be a missionary in Madagascar and South Africa for 2 years after graduating from high school. My experiences in Africa were unforgettable. They altered my perspective on life and gave me greater understanding as to how I wanted to live out my life. After returning from Africa I returned home to Ottawa and rekindled my passion for sports and played college basketball while attending school. During this time I met and married my amazing wife Catherine. Since being married we have lived in Arizona, Utah and Virginia as we finished school and began working. We now have 2 little ones, and are back home in Canada. I am currently a Teacher and Coach. Life is good.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents became members of the church in the late 70's. The missionaries knocked on their door and my dad says he felt there was something special about them, he invited them in and... lucky for me, the church taught them about the importance of families and a few years later my older brother was born. My parent took us to church consistently while I was growing up. In my early teens I recognized feeling the spirit during church activities on numerous occasions. When I was 16 my mother past away from cancer and her passing forced me to ask myself some very big questions about life and why we are here. Through scripture study, prayer and how I felt as I lived the commandments, I gained a testimony that what the church teaches is truth and brings true happiness. My faith is continially strengthened as I live life the way I feel God wants me to. Despite the many challenges life can sometimes brings which are essential for growth, my wife and I raise our family feeling very blessed and confident knowing that we have a Father in Heaven who loves us and wants nothing but the best for us.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing my best to follow Christ's example. As a Father I invest time into my family and share with my children that they are loved and very important both to me and God. As a youth leader at church I try and help the young people learn where they will find happiness. As a teacher I try and help students know how unique and significant they are and that they have potential to do great things. As a coach I try and help young people learn to work hard, set goals, persevere, and to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes from earning something. As a member of the human race I try to love my neighbour and remember I can learn so much from others. As a boy, I once saw my dad get out of our car into a -30 degree snow storm to scrap the ice of the car of a young mother struggling to do it herself. That one simple example of "loving your neighbour" has had huge impact on my life. I believe service to others is at the centre of the gospel and I have tried to follow my fathers example throughout my life. Keeping my wife and family as my greatest priority, doing my best to keep the commandments, and serving others is how I live my faith.
