Hi I'm Matt.

I live near Elkhart, IN. I'm a college instructor, a Navy veteran, a husband, and a father of three little boys. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a computer science instructor at a local community college. After serving six years in the Navy and spending almost five years in the fast-paced world of online retail, I decided it was time to slow things down and spend more time with my family. I'm married to an amazing woman and we've been blessed with three little boys and one more on the way. When I'm not at work or spending time with my family, I enjoy the outdoors (hiking, camping, shooting, fishing, and geocaching), amateur radio, and working with a great group of 14-15 year old Scouts as the Varsity Scout Coach.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up a member of the church. As a kid, I mostly went to church because it was the expected thing to do in my family. It wasn't until I moved away to go to college that I really started going to church because I wanted to. I was lucky to find some good friends who encouraged me to take Institute classes and to get involved in Church activities. I spent a lot of time studying the scriptures that year. As a kid I had always figured the Church was true, but I realized I had never really asked for myself. As I continued to study the scriptures and pray about the truthfulness of the restored gospel, the feeling gradually came to me that what I had taken for granted for so long was actually true. It wasn't a sudden answer to a specific prayer, but rather a gradual reassurance that what I had been taught all my life was true. Even though I had grown up a member of the Church, I still had to find out for myself that it was true. That was almost twenty years ago. Since then life has taken a lot of unexpected twists and turns, but the one thing that has never wavered is my knowledge that the Lord restored his Church through the Prophet Joseph Smith, that the Church is led today by a living prophet, and my family and I can live with our Heavenly Father again.

How I live my faith

I am lucky to be able to work with a fantastic group of young men in the Church. I serve as the Team Coach for the Varsity Scout Team that is chartered by the Church. Being involved in Scouting is both a lot of fun and a lot of work. It's very rewarding to see the Scouts gain skills and confidence as they advance through the ranks. Scouting gives young men the opportunity to participate in fun, challenging activities that teach important life lessons and build character. As the father of three young boys, I see it as preparation for when they are teenagers!
