Hi I'm Diane

I grew up in the Central Valley of California. I'm Chicana. I'm a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a friend. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My life began when I was five years old. I hated school. They told me I could not speak Spanish and I could no longer stay at home. When I could no longer stand it, I let my opinions be known one morning by kicking and screaming to resist any hands that struggled to wrench me from the car into the horrid classroom. My mom was patient and as always knew just what to do. We returned home where I was led to the big couch in the living room. My mother sat me down and told me her story. She ended with a simple statement: “No seas una burra”. It is a phrase that could be translated into “don’t be an idiot”. The lesson I learned that day accounts for the way I am today. Ever since then I have strived for and appreciated any opportunity to learn something new. I found that music is my favorite language, that karate is peaceful, that dance is in every aspect of life, that literature is timeless, that science is a tangible beauty, and that people are the same but unique anywhere you go. I have been blessed with a great family and wonderful parents whom I love very, very much. I am a Sophomore at BYU studying Spanish Translation. I love studying languages, different cultures, music, and Latin dancing. I've played piano for 8 years and have had the blessing of being able to play for many baptisms and witness the power of change that brings joy into so many lives. I love life, I love my family, my culture, my Savior, and my Heavenly Father.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have learned for myself that this church is true and that by living by the principles of the gospel my life is blessed with great happiness. I have found that the more I study the scriptures and pray, the surer I am that there is a God who loves his children. I know that he created a plan in the preexistence to help us find joy and that he sent his son to earth to die for us and redeem us. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God who translated ancient scripture by divine revelation. I know this because every time I study the Book of Mormon I am filled with a spirit of peace and joy. I know that it testifies of Christ and Heavenly Father and that it teaches things that are good. My life is not always easy and perfect but I know who I am and I know that I am never alone.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by constantly striving to live my life with integrity and the knowledge that I am a daughter of God. In my ward I am in charge of singing time for our small group of primary children. I enjoy being able to teach children the gospel through music. One of their favorite songs is "I'm Trying to be like Jesus". The lyrics are simple and the message clear. "I'm trying to be like Jesus in all that I do and say." Christ is our perfect example of how we should live our lives and although we will probably never be as perfect as him the important thing is to try to be more like him. I live my faith by trying. Trying to love my neighbors more. Trying to be more Christ-like. It is not always easy but each day is another opportunity to improve.
