Hi I'm Jan

I was born, grew up and have always lived in Adelaide. I'm a daughter, a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My family are the most important people in the world to me. I am proud of my three children, their spouses, and most of all of my five grandchildren. They give me so much joy and love. I am so happy that they live nearby and I can spend time with them often. I'm what's commonly called a "foodie". I love to cook, and I cook in bulk. My husband, John, says we're the perfect match - I love to cook, and he loves to eat. I like to try new things, and to cook for functions, to make special foods, and to cook for other people. I often cook a meal for 12 people, and give away what we don't need. It's one way of helping others, I can take meals to those who are sick, or struggling. I work full time, so sometimes find it challenging to juggle work, home and family life. My husband and I live with my father in the same house that I lived in with my parents from when I was 2 years old. It is a little odd - I moved out to get married, and lived with my own family for 22 years. Now my husband and I have moved back in with my Dad, to help him as he gets older. It is wonderful, and has helped us to simplify our lives and focus on the things that really matter, like our family, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I love the Lord Jesus Christ. It is wonderful to know that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me, and knows me and my every need. He blesses me continuously, and answers my every prayer. I know I am a better person since I joined the Church 13 years ago. My children tell me so, too. It brings me such joy to know where I came from, why I am here, and that I can return to live with my Heavenly Father. I joined the Church 13 years ago, when Missionaries came into my home and taught me about the Gospel. While I was brought up in the Methodist/Uniting Church, I had no real understanding of eternity, and what eternal life meant. While I don't understand everything about it, I do know that I want to do my best during this life, to enjoy the fulness of the Gospel, and to live with my family forever. I love the song our children sing "Familes can be together forever". I want that! It is such a blessing to know that we can have that if we obey the principles we learn, and live as Heavenly Father wants us to. I am so grateful for my Saviour, Jesus Christ, and for His love, and His sacrifice for me. I am thankful that missionaries and teachers have helped me to understand that I have a purpose in this life, and that when this life has ended, I can return to live with my Heavenly Father.

How I live my faith

In the Church we recognise that we are all brothers and sisters, and all children of our Heavenly Father. We care for each other, as do all brothers and sisters. There is great joy in serving others, and we are blessed when we do. We live by the Commandments the Lord has given us, and ask for, and receive, His help whenever we need it. He helps with small and simple things we need, as well as the big ones. We know that the challenges we receive are for our good, and help us to become stronger and better people.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

I am thankful that I came to earth and received a physical body. I know it is my responsibility to take the best care of it that I can. The Word of Wisdom is a guide given from Heavenly Father to help us care for our bodies. It tells us the things that we should eat, and do, like eating plenty of grains, and getting the right exercise and sleep to keep us healthy. It also teaches us the things that are bad for our body, like coffee, and tea, alcohol and drugs and tobacco. It amazes me that the harmful nature of tobacco was revealed to Joseph Smith so many years ago, and has been proved by science to be correct in modern days. And we constantly see the harm done by alcohol and other drugs in our society. Heavenly Father knows our needs, and gave us the Word of Wisdom that we can have the best health possible.
