Hi I'm Dorothy

I taught religion for 40 years. I have traveled to 62 countries and 50 states and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

In my youth I did performance singing, dancing and acting. I graduated from college in speech, drama and English. I taught in the public school system until I had my first child, then I taught religion (scriptures) to High School students before school for 20 years while I was raising my family. After my first husband died, I taught religion (scriptures) to High School students full time for 10 years, and then I taught religion (scriptures) on the college level for 10 years. I married a Religion Professor whose wife had died. He owns a tour company. I am a mother of 4 children, 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. As a mother I did a lot of sewing, making most of my childrens' and my clothing.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised by parents who had a strong conviction of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My father used to tell us stories from the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I never doubted the things that they told me. I always lived the Mormon life style, staying away from immorality, alcohol, tobacco and drugs. But I didn't have a strong conviction of the truthfulness of the Gospel until I read the Book of Mormon for myself and prayed about it. Then the Holy Ghost bore a strong witness to my heart that it was true. I didn't change my life style any, but I was changed inside. A leader of the Church once said that the difference between a person with a strong conviction, or testimony, and a person without a testimony was the difference between a live tree and a dead stump. That is what happened to me. I had a burning desire to devote my life to learning, living and teaching the Gospel.

How I live my faith

I have been in the presidency of the women's organization. I have worked in the youth organization as a drama director. I taught the adult Sunday school class. I lead a gospel discussion group.

What are Mormon Temples used for?

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse." Malachi 4:5-6 Elijah has turned our hearts to our fore-fathers. We do a lot of genealogy to find out who our fore-fathers are. "Jesus answered, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God " John 3:3-5 Jesus said a person must be baptized to be saved. If our fore-fathers did not have an opportunity to be baptized by someone who had authority from Jesus Christ to baptize, should they be kept from the Kingdom of God? We go to the sacred temples and stand in for our fore-fathers and are baptized in their name for them. If they were not sealed together as man and wife for eternity, we stand in for them, and in their names, are sealed for them. This is our gift of love to our fore-fathers. They have the free agency to accept or reject the work we do for them. Show more Show less

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

In order to enter the very sacred temple a member of the church must have a temple recommend signed by the Bishop of his ward (pastor of his congregation) proving that he lives the Mormon lifestyle, which is no sex outside of marriage, no alcohol, tobacco or drugs. He pays tithing (10% of his income), is honest and kind in all his dealings with his fellowmen, is loyal to the church and follows the living prophet. In the temple we dedicate our lives to Jesus Christ (Matthew 22:37) and promise Him that we will help spread His Gospel over the earth. We prove that we mean it by going on a mission. Young men can't go until they are 19. They go for 2 years. Young women can't go until they are 21. They go for 1 1/2 years. They are not paid, they do not date. They spend their full time teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the language of the people. Matt. 28:18-20 Before the Savior was crucified He said to Peter, who was the chief apostle, "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven:and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven." Matthew 16:19 We believe that there is a Prophet and 12 Apostles on the earth today who have those sealing powers from God. The only place on the earth where a couple can be sealed together in marriage for time and all eternity is inside a sacred temple. Matthew 19:5-6, 1 Corinthians 11:11 Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about "eternal life?"

Mormons believe that because of Jesus Christ all people who have had a physical body will receive that body in a physical resurrection. Job 19:25-26, 1 Corinthians 15:22-23. John 11:25-26. 2 Corinthians12:2 tells about a man who was caught up to the 3rd heaven. We believe there are 3 different kinds of worlds. In 1 Corinthians 15:40-42 It tells that people will be resurrected with different kinds of bodies. We believe there are three different laws, and during this life we choose which of these laws we want to live. The lowest law is Telestial. Telestial law is selfishness. Every sin is an act of selfishness. It is an attitude that I am going to take whatever I want, and I don't care who gets hurt. People who choose to live this law will be resurrected with a Telestial body and will live forever in a Telestial world. There will be no family life in that world. This world we are now in is a Telestial world. The Terrestrial world is like a Garden of Eden. The honorable men and women of the earth will live there. There will be no family life there. Jesus will visit there. The Celestial Kingdom is where God lives. It is more glorious than we can imagine. People who choose to obey all of the laws and ordinances of the Gospel, love & serve others, and have been baptized by the authority of Jesus Christ, and have been sealed together as a family by the power of God, will live there together as a family forever in the presence of God. Life eternal is to know God. John 17:3 Show more Show less

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

When we came into this world we did not bring anything with us. When we leave this world, we will not take anything with us. Everything in this world belongs to God, who created it. He allows us to use it, and then we have to account to Him for what we did with it, whether we used it for selfish reasons, or to bless the lives of others. In the Old Testament it says: "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me, But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." Malachi 3:8-10 Tithe means a tenth. Tithing is more a matter of faith than dollars. Those of us who pay tithing can testify that God does open the windows of heaven and pour out blessings to us. The Church uses the money to bless the lives of all the members, with religious education, universities, chapels, temples, genealogy research, missionary work, and care for the sick and needy. Money could not be used for better purposes. God gives us everything, and only asks for 10% in return!! Will we rob God?? Show more Show less

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

When Jesus was on the earth, He organized His church, and chose 12 Apostles to lead it. In Ephesians 2:19-20 it says that when people joined His church, they became fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. It says His church was built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and Jesus Christ was the corner stone of the Church. In Ephesians 4: 11-14 It says that Jesus called apostles, prophets, and other callings in His church. The purpose was to perfect the saints, do the work of the ministry, and edify all of the members; to bring them to a unity of faith, a knowledge of the Son of God and to become perfect like Jesus. The members were not to be like children tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, sleight of men and cunning craftiness. Before the Savior was crucified He said to Peter, who was the chief apostle, "I give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven" Matthew 16: 19 Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot in the quorum of the12. Acts 1:26 As apostles died, they were replaced by other men, showing that the quorum should continue. Later Paul was chosen to be an apostle. 1 Corinthians 1:1. James, the brother of Jesus became an apostle Galatians 1:19. Paul referred to his missionary companion, Barnabas, as an apostle. 1 Corinthians 9: 1-6. Obviously the quorum of the 12 was supposed to continue to lead the Church after the death of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

Around 600 BC, there was a prophet named Lehi. God commanded Lehi to take a small group of people to the American continent. They took with them brass plates that contained the Old Testament. God continued to call prophets among these people. The teachings of these prophets were engraved on gold plates. They wrote what they were inspired by God to write. Their teachings confirm the truthfulness of the teachings of the prophets in Judea who wrote the Bible. Anciently scriptures written to be preserved for future generations were engraved on metal plates. The scriptures for use by people of that day were engraved on wood, or on parchment wound around wood. Ezekiel prophesied that the scriptures written by the descendants of Judah who wrote the Bible, and the descendants of Joseph, who wrote the Book of Mormon would be used together. Ezekiel 37:15-17. Jesus told his disciples in Judea He had other sheep that were not in their fold and he needed to visit them. John 10:14-16. After His resurrection He came to the American continent and taught the people His Gospel.(Book of Mormon 3Nephi11-27) The next to the last Prophet, Mormon, made an abridgment of their writings, so the book is named for him. The last Prophet, Moroni, promised if you will read the Book of Mormon and ask God, God will tell you of its truth (B of M Moroni 10: 4-5) Moroni hid the gold plates and returned as a resurrected being to show Joseph Smith where they were.By the power of God, Joseph translated the plates. What does Mormonism teach regarding baptism?

Jesus told Nicodemus "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." John 3:5. John the Baptist told his converts "I baptize you with water, someone mightier than I will baptize you with the Holy Ghost." Matthew 3:11 He was referring to Jesus. Jesus set the example of being baptized, even though He was without sin. John baptized where there was much water, because he baptized by immersion. John 3: 23 Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water.Matthew 3:16 Baptism must be by immersion because of what it symbolizes. It symbolizes rebirth. Before we were born we were in our mother's womb in a bag of water. At the time of birth we came out of the water into a new life.At the time of our birth we took on our father's name. At the time of our spiritual birth, we come out of the water to a new life and we take on the name of Jesus Christ. Baptism symbolizes death and resurrection. The person's sinful life is buried in a grave of water and he comes up out of that grave to a spiritual new life.Romans 6:3-6 Before baptism, there must be sincere repentance.Baptism is symbolic of being cleansed of all our sins, therefore it must be by immersion, because we must be cleansed of ALL of our sins. Why don’t women hold the priesthood in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? How do Mormon women lead in the Church?

People come into this world totally helpless. Small children need constant care. That responsibility is on the mother, as men cannot bear and nurse children. The early years of a person's life are so important to mold his character. No one has more influence in a person's life than his mother. She is his first teacher and preacher. Motherhood is a very important responsibility, as well as a great blessing! Women serve in the women's organization, the youth organization and the Sunday School. The Priesthood runs the Church. It is a great responsibility, and a great blessing! It is very time consuming. Men do this without pay, in addition to their profession. One person could not do justice to these two big, very important responsibilities of motherhood and priesthood. When Moses led the 12 tribes of Israel out of Egypt, they had been slaves and had no opportunity to learn leadership skills. Moses was carrying the leadership role by himself. His father-in-law, Jethro, told him he could not carry that leadership load by himself. Exodus 18:13-27 Moses put the tribes to a test, the tribe of Levi passed the test and was given the lesser priesthood. Numbers 3:5-9 Aaron, the older brother of Moses, helped Moses free the slaves so he and his sons were made the Priests.Exodus 28:1-4. The other 11 tribes held no priesthood at all. Moses was the only one who held the higher priesthood. God has always restricted who could hold the Priesthood, because it is such a big responsibility. . Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the Holy Ghost? Who is the Holy Ghost?

In our pre-mortal life, God, the Eternal Father, chose two of His spirit children to serve as counselors in the Godhead with Him. Jehovah (Jesus) was chosen to come to earth, to set the example, teach the gospel and to conquer sin and death to make repentance, forgiveness and resurrection possible for all mankind. The Holy Ghost was chosen to communicate with the spirits of mankind in mortality. In order to do this, it was necessary for Him to remain a personage of Spirit, and not have a body of flesh and bones. Doctrine and Covenants 130:22 The Holy Ghost was present at the baptism of Jesus. Jesus came up out of the water, Heavenly Father spoke from heaven, and the Holy Ghost descended like a dove. Matthew 3:16-17. The mission of the Holy Ghost is to comfort people & testify of Jesus. John 15:26. He teaches people all things & brings them to their remembrance. John 14:26, He guides people in all truth, shows them things to come, & glorifies Jesus. John 16:13-15. No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthians 12:3. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1 Cor. 12:7 Many different gifts, such as wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning spirits, & gift of tongues are given to mankind from the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 The Holy Ghost bears testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, and by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things. Who chooses the Mormon prophet?

During the time that Jesus was on the earth, He chose 12 apostles to serve under Him in the leadership of His church. He said to them:; "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit--What ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you." John 15:16. When apostles died, they were replaced. After the death of Judas Iscariot, the apostles prayed to know whom God had chosen, and Matthias was called and ordained to be a witness of Christ's resurrection..Acts 1:21-26 The members of Christ's church were called saints, and His church was built on the foundation of apostles and prophets, with Christ as the chief corner stone. Ephesians 2: 19-22 These prophets and apostles and other church leaders were to perfect the saints (members of the church), do the work of the ministry, and help church members become more Christ like. Ephesians 4: 11-15 Paul was called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God. 1 Corinthians 1:1 After the death of Jesus Christ, Peter, who was the senior apostle, became the prophet. The same pattern is followed today. Jesus chooses the apostles by revelation. At the death of the prophet, the senior apostle becomes the next prophet. By revelation to the prophet, David O. McKay, Thomas Monson was chosen of God to be an apostle in 1963. In 2008, at the death of President Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas Monson, the senior apostle, became the prophet. Show more Show less
