Hi I'm Derrick

I'm a surgeon-in-training. I'm a father and husband. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a physician in a surgical residency training program. I have a beautiful wife and two small children. We love to spend time together reading books, playing games, gardening, and being outdoors.

Why I am a Mormon

The gospel has shaped my life since I was a child. At first, I relied upon the testimonies of my family members but eventually I was given a spiritual reassurance of my own. This strong faith and testimony helped me a lot as a young person and later led me to spend two years as a missionary in the Philippines. During that time, I saw firsthand the wonderful blessings and life-altering miracles that come through accepting, living, and embracing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Since then, I've become a husband and father. The world is a bit of a scary place and giving my children a foundation in the truths of the gospel seems more important than ever.

How I live my faith

Though I am far from perfect, I try to "live" my faith on a daily basis ie not just on Sunday. In my professional work, I meet many people with serious illness and frequently discuss issues of death and dying. I've found that those with strong faith in God are much better able to process their grief and pain. The restored gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ gives further insight into the plans that our Heavenly Father has for us in this life and in the hereafter. This knowledge really helps me keep an eternal perspective. Though it's not always easy to be a practicing member of the church, I stay active as a member because it keeps me grounded in the gospel and gives me access to great blessings such as: the guidance of living prophets, a community of diverse and faithful members, priesthood ordinances, and the sealing powers of the temple.
