Hi I'm Mike

I love my family. I have five kids-the oldest in college and the youngest twins still in diapers. I work at the CDC. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born and raised in Wisconsin. When I was in high school we moved to Utah. Since then I have lived in Washington state and Georgia. I served a two-year mission in Brazil. I have 3 kids from a previous marriage. My wife and I had twin boys two years ago, so our home is very busy with teenagers and toddlers. I work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I work on preventing congenital CMV, a viral infection that can cause birth defects. I love to ride my bike, play soccer, read, play the piano, and spend time with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents are Mormon and I was raised in this church. When I was 16 years old I listened to a talk by the Mormon prophet at the time, Ezra Taft Benson. I was working in my neighbor's yard and we were listening to the talk on the radio. President Benson said that every member of the church should read the Book of Mormon. When I heard this I felt that he was talking specifically to me. That night before I went to bed I read the first chapter in the Book of Mormon. For a number of weeks I continued to do that. One night as I was reading I had this really strong feeling that what I was reading was true and good. Previously I had followed the gospel because of my parents, but at that time I knew for myself that that is what I wanted to follow. I decided that I wanted to be a missionary. A few years later I went to Brazil as a missionary and saw how the gospel transformed people's lives and brought them much joy and peace. That first moment when I felt the Spirit of God testify to me that the Book of Mormon was the word of God changed my life forever. I am grateful that the wonderful message of Jesus Christ and his Atonement came into my life.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith by learning about Jesus Christ, what he did, and how he treated people. I truly hope to improve myself each day so that I treat others the way he did. It is hard for me to always keep that in mind, but I know it is a worthwhile goal. I spend a lot of time with my family and I try to teach my kids with the scriptures and by example. I hope that by sharing these teachings with them they will have a desire to know God and to live his commandments. At church I serve in the men's organization and sometimes teach lessons on Sundays. I also play the piano in some church meetings. I love the good influence the gospel has had on my life.
