Hi I'm Jaren

I'm a marketing consultant, a homeschool dad, and a science fiction fan. I love my family, I read the Bible, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in the suburbs in the 1970s. I watched Star Trek reruns, drank chocolate milk, and played in vacant fields on my bike. My dad was a dozer operator and a cross-country motorcycle racer. I 'lived' outside. In high school, my passions were wrestling, debate, and choir. I took a debate scholarship to college and eventually graduated in Mass Communication. I love to write, build websites, and manage business projects.

Why I am a Mormon

There was safety in my parents' home, but worldly influences took their toll on people close to me. Addiction was their silent temptation. Alcohol and drugs hurt people I cared about. One friend struggled through two failed marriages before addiction took him to a same-gender relationship. I grew up near these temptations, but Gospel principles taught in my home and in the church saved me. My friends ask why Mormons have so many rules. Well, it's about avoiding addiction which is the only way to be free. Greed is another addiction. As a marketing consultant, I see products and services that are designed to make buyers crave more. Tempting someone into addiction is really just cheating them out of their freedom. I believe that Freedom of Choice is a gift from God. Free agency is part of God's plan and a guiding principle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It's one of the reasons I love this church. I value freedom.

How I live my faith

Volunteering to lead Boy Scouts, teach scripture classes, or plan activities keeps me out of trouble. The church organization and its programs are truly inspired and directed by our Father in Heaven. I will take any assignment, because no matter how uncomfortable the task may be, the result will be growth and progress for the people, the church, and even me. I try to do good works, because I love the Lord and He has asked us to follow Him. I believe that God sends prophets to teach us and guide us. The Bible is full of them. Prophets get revelation from God, they write it down as scripture, and preach it to us in boldness and humility. I believe Joseph Smith was a prophet of the same kind and that the Book of Mormon is scripture for our time.
