Hi I'm Dan Mercer

I'm a college student, I love Colorado, I program smartphone apps, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love computers! One of my biggest hobbies is software programming. I have been a hobbyist Android developer since I was 16. In fact, I wrote a 3D game engine for the Android platform, which I intend to use to make games for Android smartphones. I was also the Chief Software Architect for one year in my high school FIRST Robotics Competition team. I also love singing. I'm not the best at it, but I love to sing bass in my congregation's choir. I have attended one term of college, but I have postponed my education to serve a mission for the Church. I am currently serving in the California San Jose Mission.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because it makes me a better, happier person. Every aspect of my personality is affected by my faith - without it, I would not be the person I am. Being a Mormon gives me hope, because I know that "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28) in spite of the things that may happen to me. I also know that, through our Heavenly Father's Plan of Happiness, I can be together with my family for eternity. I know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Eternal Father, and He created us and this Earth. I know God is the literal father of our spirits, and that he loves us more perfectly, more completely than we can comprehend. I know Heavenly Father sent His Son to atone for our sins, and that through that infinite sacrifice, the Atonement, we can return to live with Heavenly Father again. We can overcome our natural weaknesses and become perfect through the blood of the Savior. I know that the gospel in its entirety was restored by God through the prophet Joseph Smith, who was the first prophet in the latter days. Under the direction of God, and by God's power, Joseph was able to translate the ancient record of the inhabitants of the Americas, known as the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is sacred scripture, which complements the Bible. By following the teachings in these books and the teachings of our modern prophets who have been called of God, I can obtain Eternal Life in the kingdom of heaven.

How I live my faith

In my student ward at college, I served as the secretary for one of the groups of men in the ward. It was a great experience to work with the leaders of that group to address the spiritual needs of the group members. I also home taught two sets of roommates. (Home teaching is where two guys go together to teach people in their homes. Each companionship is usually assigned to a few families, so they can focus on their needs. In college, we taught by room.) I really enjoyed being able to reach out to and serve the people I taught. I was really touched when my companion and I were able to bring the Spirit into our conversations. I am also living my faith by serving a two year mission for the Church. I am tremendously grateful for the opportunity to devote two years of my life to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
